An update from T.R. and Angie Knight
Serving with SIL International - Language Technology

Onion seedlings emerging

May 2023 - Spring is the time we are planting our garden, and also the time to plan our SIL budgets. If we want things to grow, be they plants or our ministry, then we have to invest time and resources followed by prayer and patience. “He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.” 2 Corinthians 9:10 ESV.

May and June are budget season at SIL and T.R.’s vision swirls with spreadsheets, deliverables, expenditures, formulas, and more. He is busy working with his team leads on each of their project budgets, working on his own Bible Translation Software general budget, and assisting the finance team with the budget process. Decades of experience working on budgets and audits when he was with Taylor University have provided a wealth of insights for assisting Language Technology through a transitionary period in 2023 of new budget models, a new financial system, and new fundraising processes. Once the budgets are completed, submitted, reviewed, reworked, then approved, next up will be developing funding proposals, but that is a discussion for a future newsletter.

If you are the type who really likes to understand the business of a ministry, feel free to reach out and ask us for more details about the administrative work that T.R. does. SIL International is pleased to share information about its financial position. If you feel God leading you to invest in the work that SIL International is doing in the world, keep reading and you will find information at the end of this newsletter.

God at Work

“God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply.” - Hudson Taylor

Here are some things He has done recently:

  • Quite a few Language Technology staff and leadership attended  EMDC 2024 this month in Thailand with over 800 attendees from 228 organizations. T.R. was unable to attend but met online with many of the attendees and supported those in attendance. The Eurasia Media & Distribution Consultation (EMDC) began in 2010 as a multi-agency consultation that would meet annually. It is intended to be a venue where minority language workers, Bible translators, literacy workers, language development workers, and “others” in the greater Eurasia region, can meet with media specialists (including radio, TV, internet, mobile), IT technicians, recording specialists, graphic artists, and specialists in Orality and EthnoArts (arts, drama, dance).

  • The Paratext team has begun onboarding new team members, two of which are recent Taylor University graduates. Being alumni, Angie and I are very proud and excited.

I hope this small glimpse encourages you to see what God is doing through all of us serving at SIL International.

Prayer and Praise

  • Please pray for the budget process at SIL.

  • Please pray as Angie and T.R. navigate current challenges with her Multiple Sclerosis. We are having difficulties getting doctor appointments scheduled with offices currently booked until July.

  • Please pray as Rachel is seeking employment post-graduation and planning for her June wedding.

  • Please pray for the Language Technology leadership team as we continue to seek a new Director of Language Software Development and a Project Manager.

  • Please pray for T.R. and his Talent Acquisition team as there has been a delay until June of the new Talent Acquisition Manager joining the team.

  • Praising God that our garden is all cleaned up and planted for this year. Looking forward to future harvests of fruits and vegetables.

  • Please let us know how can be praying for you!

Thank you for your prayers and encouragement.

In Him,
T.R. and Angie Knight

Spring celebrations!

Rachel Knight in her graduation robes for the celebration of her Master of Library Science.

Excited to celebrate with our daughter Rachel as she earned her Master of Library Science in May. Look at that beaming smile!

Knight family garden with all our raised beds and current plants

You may not know this, but I love gardening. My work is very mental and requires a lot of time in front of a computer. Thus, I really enjoy spending time outdoors, getting my hands dirty, and actively enjoying God’s creation. This year we added quite a bit to the Knight Garden. We added two more wheelchair height garden beds so Angie has access now to the majority of the garden and loves working in the dirt with me. We also added a small greenhouse, rain barrels, and additional tart cherry trees to create a small orchard in our side yard.

How can you support the work we are doing with SIL International?

Glad you asked! T.R. is currently in a fully funded position in his role as Director of Bible Translation Software. The finances come from a funding organization devoted to innovation in Bible Translation. Because T.R.’s position is fully funded, we are not currently requesting you to partner with us financially. What we could use the most are your prayers and encouragement. If you would like to financially support the work that SIL does, you can give online or via check. Currently, online donations go to a central fund for SIL. We are in process of implementing a new online donation website that would allow you to give to my department’s projects or even to my work specifically. If you give via check, you can include in the note field a designation of Bible Translation Software - KBTD16. Thank you for your prayers and support.
