FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Music for a Sunday Afternoon perfomances
at Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library
(TOPEKA) – Two free musical performances will be held as part of the Music for a Sunday Afternoon series at Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library in the next month. The Kaw Valley Cornet Band will play Kansas Territorial and Civil War music on Sunday, May 21 at 3 p.m. in Marvin Auditorium. Pianist Dr. Kristi Baker-Lampe will play music by Chopin, Clementi and Sergio Rene Martinez on Sunday, June 4 at 3 p.m. in Marvin Auditorium.

The Kaw Valley Cornet Band will play music from the Kansas Territorial period through the Civil War, 1850s and 1860s, with a few modern pieces that are reminiscent of the era. The performance will also include historical narrative. Band members are
conductor Steve Holloman; trumpets – Bob Ball, Jere Herring, Dalton Imhoff-Brey, Steve Patterson and Scott Tetter; French horn – Joanne Field; trombone – Rick Baker; euphonium – Kyam McCormack; tuba – Jim Culver; drums – Bob Keckeisen; announcer – David Tangeman; and vocals – Robb Baker.

The band was founded in 1987 by Rick Baker who was inspired by the Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band’s performance to form a similar group that presented historical music with an entertaining narrative. Though the Kaw Valley Cornet Band performs on modern instruments, trumpets instead of cornets for example, they think of themselves as a modern recreation of a small town 19th century brass band.
Dr. Kristi Baker-Lampe's June 4 performance will include the first U.S. performance of the Sonata No. 5 ("Tetrology of Nature") by Argentine composer Sergio Rene Martinez who will attend the event. Baker-Lampe travels extensively giving public concerts, lectures, teacher workshops and master classes. Her recent credits include multiple appearances as a performing artist in the Teachers’ Academy of the Piano Texas International Festival in Fort Worth, Texas, and at the World Piano Conference in Novi Sad, Serbia. Baker-Lampe is currently preparing to record and release the Piano Album of Serbian composer Isidor Bajic, a collection that has never been performed outside Serbia.
Baker-Lampe holds a bachelor of music education and a master of music in piano performance and pedagogy from Kansas State University and a doctorate of musical arts in piano performance from the University of Kansas. She currently operates KBL Piano, LLC in Topeka and serves as music director and choirmaster at St. David’s Episcopal Church. Prior to returning to her native Topeka, she served for five years as Adjunct Professor of Applied Piano at Ottawa (Kansas) University, and had a 32-year career as a public school choral director. In 2009 the Music Teachers’ National Association recognized Baker-Lampe as a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music in Piano, a distinction she still holds.
