Invasive Species Highlight: Garlic Mustard

As soon as the weather starts to warm up in the Midwest, garlic mustard begins to make its appearance throughout the landscape. Here are some tips on identifying and managing this invasive plant in your garden or woodlands.

Background:

Garlic mustard is a flowering biennial plant that was originally introduced to North America from Europe in the 1800s to use in cooking, as the name implies. Since it was first identified in Long Island, New York, garlic mustard has spread rapidly throughout the Northeast and Midwest, and is now present in 37 states in the U.S., according to the USDA.

Tree of the Month: Boxelder
(Acer negundo)

Boxelder, also known as Ashleaf Maple or Manitoba Maple, is a small to medium-sized tree that thrives in wet or moist soils. It is commonly found along stream banks which makes it a popular tree in the St. Croix watershed! In fact, this is a tree many people can bond over since it can be found as far South as Florida and as far North as Alberta, Canada.

Boxelders can be identified most easily by looking at their leaves. It is the only maple to have pinnately compound leaves (multiple leaflets stemming off the same twig - like ash!) and it has serrations along the leaf edge.

Fun fact: Boxelder trees are dioecious (how's that for a Scrabble word?), meaning they have genders. Some trees will only have female reproductive parts, while others only have male reproductive parts.
