Looking After Our

Community

Dear Parents/Carers

Many of you will have a member of your family or someone you know who suffers from asthma.

In the UK, 5.4 million people have asthma. That's one in every 12 adults and one in every 11 children.

Asthma sufferers are far more sensitive to aerosol sprays of all kinds. Their use inside buildings is not only likely to make their breathing more difficult, but can have serious health impacts/consequences.

That is why we are an aerosol free school

Aerosol sprays are a type of irritant that can cause your airways and lungs to become inflamed. This happens because the sprays penetrate the air around you. The aerosols also contain small particles that can trigger inflammation of the airways.

What this means in practical terms is that students should not be bringing any form of aerosol spray in to school. This also goes for sprays that are technically not aerosols such as body sprays. Any heavily fragranced product such as body spray is also likely to cause harm to those who suffer from asthma.

All students are fully aware that they should not bring aerosols and sprays in to school and that they will be confiscated if they do.

If a student makes the decision not to support our aerosol free school policy and is caught with or using an aerosol or spray, it will be confiscated. They will have the opportunity to collect the item at the end of the day. If they choose not to collect the item, it will be disposed of.

Please have this discussion with your children such that we continue to look after all members of our school community.

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend with your children.

Liddington Netball Tour 2023

The Liddington Netball Tour has been running at John Hanson for 11 years now.  This year we took our biggest ever group of students mirroring the increase in numbers who have joined and have committed themselves to playing netball at John Hanson.  We entered  8 teams into the Liddington tournament spanning from Year 7 to Year 11.  There were over 40 teams in the competition.

The weekend gives our students the opportunity to play teams from around the country, meet an England netball player and have a go at the PGL activities when not playing netball.

This year’s competition saw 5 out of the 8 of our teams return with medals around their necks.

Year 7A - gold medalists
Year 7B - bronze medalists
Year 8A - silver medalists
Year 9A - bronze medalists
Year 11 - bronze medalists

They were presented their medals by Millie Sanders, ex- Manchester Thunder and Current Leeds Rhino GD/GK in the netball Superleague and Under 21’s England player.

The students were impeccably behaved as always and represented our school in a very positive light.

I would like to say a huge thank you on behalf of me and the students,  to our amazing PE team for coming along to help coach and manage the teams - Mr Green, Miss Goater, Mr Nash, Mrs Aldridge, and Mr Aldridge.

In recognition of his commitment, he has been nominated by the English Schools Football Association for an award and it would be great if everyone in our community could vote for him!

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.

We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.

This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.

Important EDI events over the next week:

29th April International Dance Day. 5th Buddha's Birthday (and enlightenment) known as Vesak.

Words you might not know:
International Dance Day is a celebration day for those who can see the value and importance of the art form "dance", and acts as a wake-up-call for governments, politicians and institutions which have not yet recognised its value. "Vesak", the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, is the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world. It was on the Day of Vesak two and a half millennia ago, in the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born. It was also on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.
