A huge vote of thanks and gratitude to everyone who made our recent trip to Gqeberha such a resounding success. From the dedicated staff who ensured the safety and comfort of our boys, to the parents who travelled 800 kilometres to support us, we are deeply grateful for your commitment to Wynberg Boys’ Junior School.

I am pleased that the trip was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents who attended. Your support and encouragement mean the world to us, and we are grateful for the opportunity to have shared this experience with you.

At a function hosted by Grey Junior, their Headmaster Mr Grant Butler asked me to pass on his sincere thanks to our community for making the trip possible. While results may not have always gone in our favour, some, significant ones did. I can confidently say that we have grown and improved in all areas since our visit last year.

As we move into week 5 of Term 2 and our regular programme resumes, I encourage everyone to keep an eye on the calendar for upcoming events. This weekend, we have the pleasure of hosting an ABBA concert, managed by our very own old boy, Mel Fourie. After being impressed by our music department during a visit last year, Mel mobilised his network of Old Boys to host an event with all proceeds benefiting our music department.

We extend our sincere thanks to Mel for his hard work in organising this event and wish him all the best for Saturday night's concert. If you haven't already, there are still tickets available (
click here to book), and we hope you'll join us for what promises to be a fantastic evening of fun and entertainment.

Mr Cedric Poleman
Headmaster
Grade R
As part of our theme, “People who help us”, the Grade R boys were visited by some of our moms and dads who came to share facts about their occupations with our boys. The boys learnt about what the South African National Defence Force does for our country and they got to try on real-life helmets, masks, and different combat gear. They also had an interesting visit from a mom who is a Paediatric Physiotherapist who specifically works with disabled children. The boys loved the interactive talks and asked many interesting questions.
Grade 3
The Grade 3s have been very busy this Term learning about insects and their life cycles as part of our theme “Investigating Insects”. The boys have created their own “Life Cycle of a Butterfly” while working in groups. They absolutely loved learning interesting facts about these tiny creatures.
English Week
Next week, 15 - 19 May, we will be celebrating English Week at WBJS.

Throughout the week there will be various activities and competitions for the boys to partake in. We encourage all boys to participate and try their best … you never know, there may be a prize or two on offer!
Tribute to ABBA: Music Fundraiser
We are lucky to have a band raising funds for the music department this Saturday.

They will be performing ABBA covers for our entertainment and anything we raise above the running costs will go to buying more instruments for our boys. It might be possible to raise 50K if we sell out the show but at the moment we are below the break-even mark.

Please support us and your sons with the purchase of tickets that will lead to the purchasing of more instruments for our growing department.

Many thanks and see you on Saturday.

Mr Kierman
WBJS is delighted to welcome Mike McCully and the Harmonix to our Arnold Lorie theatre on Saturday 13 May, for a one-night performance of their hit show, Tribute to ABBA. All proceeds from the evening will be towards WBJS Music Department funds.

Mike McCully's group is presented by fellow Wynberg Old Boy, Mel Fourie, whose Curtain-Call Productions has been appointed to handle all  bookings and payments on WBJS' behalf:

Music at Grey Weekend
400 boys and many parents have just returned from the amazing Grey Tour 2023. The highlight for the music department was our performance alongside the Grey Junior Concert Band as well as, for the first time, a performance by the Collegiate Girls' Junior Concert Band led by Russell Laurie.

Our Concert Band is vastly outnumbered by the Grey and Collegiate Bands, but we had an amazing performance about which people commented on the power of our band even with much smaller numbers. Certainly, we work on very difficult material that really pushes our boys’ boundaries.

Also this year we had our Jazz Band perform for the first time. We played Birdland by the very famous Weather Report Jazz Ensemble led by Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter in the 70s. As we play more Jazz and compact ensemble arrangements of classic and contemporary Rock songs, we tend to cover material that conventional Junior School bands wouldn’t dare to try. Our boys are introduced to and easily understand the ‘feel’ of some of the songs we do in a way that can’t be taught. This ‘feel’ is a part of our Wynberg community and the historical love of Jazz and Rock that exists here so strongly. Even songs like “You’re the Inspiration” by Chicago were well-known by some of our boys before we even started working on it.

People ask us about certain members of our bands and we tell them those boys are world-class talent. As teachers, we might find real talent every few years. Here at Wynberg, we find a real musical genius every year. Our Wynberg community has an abundance of musical talent that is remarkable. Thank you to all the parents and boys for their excellence!

Combined Performance
Grade 1 Music Class
The Grade 1s have been learning all about the C and G major chords. In a broader sense, chord I and V. Chords are a group of musical notes played at the same time. Some other explanations from the boys are, “Chords are notes that sound beautiful together and make a harmony”

Hockey
Our hockey boys made us proud displaying true Supera Moras spirit during our encounter with Grey Junior School. Although the results did not all go our way, we were very pleased with the great improvement in our play which was evident in the results. The highlight of the day was the great win by our U12C team who beat their opponents 3-0 with some great saves made by their goalie! The cheerleaders created a great atmosphere and motivation for the teams. We thank all the coaches, staff, parents, and boys for the amazing support from the sidelines. Thank you to our boys for being great ambassadors of our school.

This week we kick off our Cape Town fixtures with matches against Bishops home and away.  We wish all our teams playing the best.

Next week we take on The Grove Primary School and matches will be played at the Wynberg Astro. A reminder to parents (Grades 4 - 7) to please join the Senior Hockey Google Classroom for updates, to view fixtures, and match information.

A reminder that there will be goalkeeper training for all goalkeepers on Friday afternoon from 13h45 - 14h45 on mini astro 1.

Rugby
On Saturday, 6 May 2023 Wynberg rugby history was made! After all the years of the fixture between WBJS and Grey, we finally managed victory in the U13A match of the day. A standout performance from our boys saw us come out 28-15 victors in what was a great spectacle of schoolboy rugby. Not only did the U13A do us proud, but all the teams that took to the field showed the fighting Supera Moras spirit that we engrain in our boys. There were also victories for the U12A and U12B teams.

This week will see us travel to Bishops for a full round of fixtures, although the U10D team will play their match on Monday afternoon.
Please click here for the official match letter. Please note that no hard copy match letters are being sent out this year, only a link via this newsletter. All boys who have signed up for rugby are committed to arriving at their matches on a weekly basis.

Next week we will travel to Paarl Boys with a full programme included in next week's newsletter.

As we prepare for home fixtures later in the month, we appeal to any dads who are qualified referees and would like to volunteer their services on a Saturday morning. Please email our Head of Rugby Mr Sabatta,
msabatta@wbjs.org.za, and attach your qualifications so he can get in touch.
Squash
Our boys played some tough opposition at Grey but put up a great performance. Most of these boys played their first match ever and showed true Supera Moras spirit, competing until the very last point.

Due to the WPYS Closed tournament this weekend, there will be no Friday matches.
Finance Office
Please note that the Fees Office will not be handling any cash purchases for the remainder of this term. All transactions at the office need to be via Card, Snapscan or EFT.
