Writer Abigail Thomas and I talk about her extraordinary new memoir and what life is like at 82.

I'm a huge fan of Abigail Thomas's writing so it was a thrill to get her on [B]OLDER to talk about her new book: Still Life At Eighty: the Next Interesting Thing.

Her writing is spare, lyrical, perfect. Stephen King calls her "the Emily Dickinson of Memoir."

She is frank and funny about the good and bad parts of aging. Yes, there are some aches and pains. No, she doesn't care what people think of her which she finds tremendously liberating.

We talk about:

- the difference between your early 70s (me) and your early 80s (Abby)

- how she gets through each day moment by moment

- her thoughts about death ("Please God let there be no afterlife")

- her sweet tooth and why she loves French Toast

Get the lowdown on life in your 80s in this marvelous episode with Abby Thomas:

S5-EP15: Abigail Thomas on Life at 80: Liquid Moments, Memory, French Toast and Writing

Back to Maine for the summer

I love our apartment in New Haven, Connecticut (see photo; we're on the 24th floor) but it's time to migrate north to Stonington, Maine for the summer.

It's been a tough winter and spring emotionally since my mother died suddenly in mid-February. I'm looking forward to the singular beauty of the Maine coast as a place for reflection, healing and...

And summer reading!

I just started Abraham Verghese's new book, The Covenant of Water - an Oprah's Book Club pick. I love it so far. It's an epic story of three generations of a family, cursed by drownings, and set in Kerala, on South India's coast.

I read Verghese's Cutting For Stone years ago and found it to be transcendent.

What are you reading??  Hit reply and tell me. I'd love to hear.
