Program Updates

Asian Extravaganza Continues with Asian Media Access' own production - "Between the Water and Clouds," at June 1st

Asian Media Access and the Phoenix Chinese Dance Academy are co-presenting a dance drama in an outdoors setting – “Between the Water and Cloud.” This Multidisciplinary Dance Drama will illustrate the Chinese philosophy of a simple and peaceful lifestyle to support the post-COVID era, through the artistic excellence of Chinese dance, music and poetry. The inspiration of the dance drama came from the Chinese poet Wang Wei’s famous work “MY RETREAT AT MOUNT ZHONGNAN” poem.

My heart in middle age found the Way.   And I came to dwell at the foot of this mountain.    When the spirit moves, I wander alone.  Amid beauty that is all for me....

I will walk till the water checks my path, Then sit and watch the rising clouds --

And some day meet an old wood-cutter, And talk and laugh and forget about time.

Our expert mental health panelists and moderator will discuss how parents and caretakers can get the proper help for themselves and their children. Artist Talk: Emanuel Hahn

DATE/TIME: Thursday, June 1, 2023, 8:00pm-10:00pm
PLACE:  Video release register https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfbdEpP_zmQQ2FDOGc9NxzvjGjsGQXS9kwbInBMLwynwrdYcg/viewform

Emanuel Hahn's Koreatown Dreaming series was born out of a sense of urgency to document the stories of Koreatown LA during the Covid-19 pandemic and creeping gentrification. Although Koreatown is increasingly a popular destination for tourists and transplants, many small businesses in Koreatown serving the local population are closing, and long-time establishments and mom-and-pop stores have disappeared without leaving a record of their history and contributions to the city of Los Angeles. Documenting the lives and stories of those who are still surviving, his photo series offers a compelling insight into this entrepreneurial immigrant group.

China’s ascendancy as a dominant economic and political global power has been the subject of much scholarly and political debate. More specifically, China’s renewed interest in Africa continues to beg the question, what is China’s Africa strategy or Africa – China Strategy? Some scholars suggest that China’s strategic interests in Africa are purely economic, resource extraction, and exploitation, which has led to renewed concerns about neo-colonialism. Other questions raised include how this arrangement will benefit African countries engaged with China.

This course seeks to examine these issues and better understand how China’s engagement in Africa may have a consequential impact on the continent.

2023 Women's Showcase Tournament

DATE/TIME: July 29-30, 2023
PLACE: St. Paul, M Nat McMurray Fields, 1155 Jessamine Ave W, St Paul, MN 55117

As many start to gear up for the FIFA Women’s World Cup coming this summer, we also need to recognize that we have the World’s Game being played in our own backyards. Young women from the Karen, Karenni, Nepali, East African, Hmong, African American, and Latina communities will be represented at our tournament, and most, if not all, of these athletes sit outside of the US Youth Sports System. Unfortunately the expenses for participating in youth sports, and tournaments, are oftentimes high, and cost-prohibitive for kids from lower-income families. This prevents many athletes from being noticed by college coaches and progressing onto higher education.

Our tournament was created to give these athletes the same opportunities as their peers. The goal is to even the playing field by providing more opportunities for young women to follow their dreams, and become role models for girls in their own communities for future generations to come.
