MCNARY WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS
This raptor photographed by Mark Percy on May 5, 2023, was near the crossing between hole 2 and 3. Mark shared on Facebook, that it is definitely a juvenile and more likely a Cooper's Hawk often confused with the Sharp-shinned Hawk. Juveniles of both breeds have grey/brown vertically striped chests. Adults have reddish brown horizontally barred chests. The Cornell Lab is a great resource for additional identifying marks. The raptor was also photographed by David Dieker just off hole 5 putting green.
THANK YOU!
To our McNary Estates Friends and Neighbors:
A resounding THANK YOU for your response to our P. E. O. Geranium Sale Fundraiser to raise money for scholarships for women to complete their education.  Your response made our sale a success, which will lead to the success of women receiving scholarships.  We could not provide scholarships without your support.  If you ordered, your flowers will be delivered Saturday, May 6.  If we missed you this year, we’ll be back next year. GARDEN WALK OF MCNARY
Jean Porter, McNary HOA Social Committee Chair is in need of gardens for the 1st annual Garden Walk of McNary. If we could have a house on most streets we will have 20 gardens on our walking tour! We will do a booklet that tells what is is the gardens and maybe something interesting you have to tell us about your yard. Please contact Jean Porter 250 Snead Dr N 314 795-8636 OR jeanonsnead@gmail.com
McNary Estates neighbor, Larry Scruggs is on the Salem-Keizer School Board ballot. He submitted the above advertisement as well as invited neighbors to an open house conversation. Keizer and Salem area voters will elect three new leaders to the board on May 16 for a four year term. Another McNary Estates neighbor, Bob Salazar will conclude his position on the school board as an appointee. Neighbors volunteering their service in our community is very common and is appreciated.
ON THE SOCIAL SIDE
It's Baseball season....take me out to the ball field!
Watching baseball can be a fun and enjoyable experience for fans of all ages. Whether you are a die-hard fan or simply enjoy watching a game from time to time, Keizer has many options to watch a game. There are games at the Keizer Little League Park, Vic Backlund Field at McNary High School, or at the Volcanoes Stadium for the Mavericks League. Consider watching the game with friends or family members. This can make the experience more enjoyable and provide an opportunity to discuss the game and share opinions on the players and teams. And of course, don't forget to enjoy some classic ballpark snacks like hot dogs and peanuts while you're watching the game!

Below are some most recent baseball news and other ways to enjoy games and be part of baseball future.
McNary vs West Salem Sweep Complete
Anthony Cepeda helped power the offense by driving in 5 runs on 2 doubles!
Future Celts Night is Friday, May 12th!
All Youth Baseball players in Keizer are invited to come pack the stands and root on your hometown team! We will be picking 9 kids who attend to take the field with the team during the national anthem as well as you’ll be able to meet the team on the field following the game. We hope to see you at Vic Backlund Field!
Host Families Needed
The Mavericks League is looking for host families for the 2023 season. All you need is a spare bed/ place to sleep. Please consider helping a ball player continue their dream. Host families are an integral part of helping baseball players thrive. Please contact Lisa@mavsleague.com for more info or comment on this post.

HAVE YOU READ.....?
By Ann Trombley
So let's talk about mysteries - Happened to run across some good ones. Found one on the "new mystery" shelf at the Salem Library. Remember when we were fascinated with the Swedish mysteries a
few years ago? Wallander, et al. Or were thay Danish???
Hidden Show  by Viveca Sten sounded intriguing. After getting through the Swedish names, looooong cold days, and lots if snow, I found a good story. Yound lady disappears on her way home from a party, and the small police department goes to work. Ironically I was reading it during OUR coldest, darkst days.
Back to Amazon to see what else Sten wrote. Aha! - a series of crime novels - the Sandhamn Murders. These take place on archipelago of islands off Stockholm. Now Don and I have been to Stockholm but were mainly in the city visiting friends. Just after starting the first series, Still Waters, we happened to catch a program by Rick Steves about Stockholm and the "archipelago" of islands near Stockholmn. Sandhamn is recreation island where most of the action takes place. Lots of people, big money, and even bigger boats. Again worked my way through long nights, shorter days, lots of snow and ice - and Swedish names.
Sten does a great job of creating life in the archipelago. Thomas Andreasson is the police detective; his good friend from childhood is a lawyer Nora Linde. Sten takes the reader into the mystery, suspects, and the family lives of verious residents.
Now here's the interesting part. Sandhamn is a series; I am starting book #6. Thomas and Nora continue as the major players. Sten takes us into their lives. Thomas and Nora have separate families and their own problems. Like a Swedish soap opera which, I understand, is a TV series. And with Amazon Prime, you can read these for free as part of Kindle Unlimited. Bring up the book on its page on Amazon and find Kindle unlimited. Read it on your tablet.
Now back to Thomas, Nora, and their families. Who's next on the murder list? Keep reading!  Ann Trombley

A FRESH OUTLOOK
Adventures in Arizona Await
Written By Cameron Shackelton
Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale are three bustling cities in Arizona, each with its own unique character and attractions. I recently had the pleasure of visiting these cities, and it was an experience I won't soon forget. I traveled around using the metro and bus, which was both convenient and affordable, but at times sketchy with how many crackheads are down here… In fact I saw one homeless person wielding a skateboard as their choice of weapon to fight another homeless person that was missing a leg outside of a CVS. Typical crackhead behavior.
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Phoenix Art Museum. The museum houses an impressive collection of contemporary and modern art, including works by Frida Kahlo, Picasso, and Andy Warhol. I spent hours wandering through the galleries, admiring the incredible artwork on display. The museum also hosts temporary exhibits, so there's always something new and exciting to see.
Another must-see attraction in the area is the Desert Botanical Garden. The garden is a beautiful oasis in the middle of the desert, showcasing the incredible flora and fauna of the region. I took countless photos of the stunning cacti, succulents, and wildflowers, and even spotted some native wildlife, including lizards, hummingbirds, and jackrabbits.
One of the liveliest areas of Tempe is Mill Avenue, which is packed with bars, restaurants, and shops. I spent an evening exploring the area, hopping from one bar to the next and soaking up the lively atmosphere. The bars on Mill Avenue cater to a wide range of tastes, from dive bars to upscale cocktail lounges, so there's something for everyone, especially if you have some money to burn.
I was excited to tour the Arizona State University campus. ASU is one of the largest universities in the country, and the campus is sprawling and beautiful. I wandered through the various academic buildings, libraries, and even stopped to take a photo with the iconic "A" mountain in the background.
No trip to Arizona would be complete without soaking up some sun, and I did just that by the rooftop pool of a hotel in Tempe. The pool offered stunning views of the surrounding mountains and city skyline, and I spent hours lounging in the sun and sipping on Long Island ice teas and something called a “Hillbilly Punch.”
Overall, my trip to Tempe, Phoenix, and Scottsdale was a fantastic experience. From the vibrant art scene to the beautiful natural attractions, there was never a dull moment. The metro and bus made getting around easy, and I enjoyed exploring the different neighborhoods and soaking up the local culture. I would highly recommend this area to anyone looking for a fun and unique vacation destination. I am currently headed to Chicago for a week, then I will be in NYC for a few days, then finishing the trip by staying in Austin for nearly a week. Adventure awaits!

VetsFest 5K Run and 3K Walk Evolves
By Mark Piercy, Volunteer Organizer

Just like a caterpillar evolves into a butterfly, so the VetsFest 5K Run and 3K Walk evolves…and also into a more beautiful version. You may remember that in last summer’s Version 2.0, a 3K walk was added. Version 3.0 has undergone further evolution that includes a slight name change to “Help Oregon Veterans 5K Run and 3K Walk” to connect it more clearly to the underlaying cause and organization behind it. Yes, we are still doing this for our Veterans, as that is the organization’s core mission, to raise awareness and funds that provide assistance to Oregon Veterans experiencing homelessness. The nonprofit behind this effort is helporegonveterans.org, founded by McNary Estates resident Robert Wood, a U.S. Navy Veteran himself. The organization has a newly created Facebook page as well where you can find content on the run and walk. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067562476914
Yes, the July 1, 2023, Version 3.0 still features the 5K Run event and again includes the accompanying 3K walk along with trophies and medals and cash awards for setting new course records. Besides the minor name change, trophies have been added for the first Masters Male and first Masters Female finishers in the 5K. You may ask, “What is a Masters runner?” Well, the answer is “a Masters runner is a runner aged 40 and older.” In addition to the new “Masters” division trophies, overall male and female winners will be awarded trophies; and ten-year age group winners will receive medals. Let’s not forget the $25 cash moolah that’s awarded for setting a new course record by a male or female.
Residents, mark your calendars. The run and walk take off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, July 1.  Both start at the same time and location on the Claggett Creek bridge by the entrance to McNary Estates. Except for the last 50 yards both events stay on the streets of McNary Estates. The events will split up for a short distance and then merge again before both finish on the McNary Golf Course grounds by the practice green. In next month’s newsletter I will give the street-by-street route for both the run and walk. Keep in mind that there will be increased car and pedestrian traffic around the golf course entrance from about 8:00a.m. when runners begin arriving to register until about 10:30a.m. when the event wraps up. During this time your best bet is to avoid the area by using the back entrance. Also, during the actual run and walk volunteers will be directing cars to the back gate and holding traffic at intersections for a few minutes at a time to allow for safe passage of the runners and walkers. Your delays will be minor.
You can preregister for the run and walk for $20 (plus a $2.20 convenience fee) through June 29 at https://runsignup.com/Races?s=&quickSearch=T&name=Help+Oregon+Veterans+5K+Run+and+3K+Walk or on race day for $25 beginning at 8:00a.m. by the finish line balloon arch. If you are not participating, consider volunteering. I will begin reaching out to all last year’s volunteers in May and welcome anyone else who has a desire to help out. Many volunteer assignments last only 30 minutes or so but a few are needed for an hour to 90 minutes or a little longer in the start and finish area with directing the runners down the home stretch, timing, staging, registration, and CHEERING! If you would like to volunteer again or for the first time, please email me at markapiercy@gmail.com or text me at 815-761-0826. It’s for our Veterans!
