Dear Pinellas County Democrats,

As we move into the month of May, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some important observances that are happening this month. May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Older Americans Month, Teacher Appreciation Month,  National Clean Air Month, and we can't forget Mother's Day.

The issues we honor this month each impact our community and our country as a whole. As a party, we stand committed to guarantee that these causes receive the attention and backing they deserve. At the same time, we have work to do ensure all our communities actually feel the support and activism of the Democratic Party on their behalf. I hope you take a moment this month to click the links above, possibly learn something new, and show your commitment to lifting up all our communities.

On to DEC happenings...April was a busy month! We renewed our in-person training, heard some amazing personal stories from our members, were out and about in the community and showing that we are here! Read on to see more, and everything we have coming up. This is a fully packed newsletter, please take your time and read it in its entirety.

Thank each of you for everything you do to support the Pinellas County Democratic Party!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Griffith
Chair, Pinellas County Democratic Party

Legislative Dems "Welcome Home" Party

Our Democratic Electeds to Tallahassee had one of the most brutal sessions in decades as they fought hard against the DeSantis/MAGA extremists who made national news with the extreme cruelty and authoritarian tone of the bills they forced upon the citizens of Florida.

Women's Rights. Civil Rights. Voting Rights. Democracy. The LGBTQ+ community. All attacked mercilessly. Join us as we say "thank you" to Pinellas Democrats who stood strong for us through it all, and celebrate our resolve for the people that will win in the end.

Guests of Honor: Senator Darryl Rouson, Representative Michele Rayner and Representative Lindsay Cross.

We'll have a great time with like-minded folks, and you'll leave energized and organized.

A Special Message From Our State Committee Members

A New Day at the Florida Democratic Party

On Saturday, May 6, the Florida Democratic Party State Executive Committee voted 73% in favor of the amendment to change the Party’s weighted vote system.

Under the Party’s new voting structure, state committee members – instead of votes – will be apportioned to the state’s 67 counties. This new structure will become effective with the Party’s quadrennial reorganization in December 2024.

Each county will continue to have at least two state committee members, with additional members allocated based on the respective county’s Democratic registration and voting performance. Instead of allocating weighted votes to a county’s two representatives, the Party will apportion an additional 266 members among the counties. Every member will have one vote. Pinellas Democrats will gain approximately 16 additional state committee members to represent us at the state level.

In addition, the FDP will become a national model for diversity and inclusion. County Parties will work with the FDP to assess the demographics of their Democratic voters and create programs with specific goals to include our historically underrepresented constituencies. This will help ensure our governing bodies at the county and state levels are more representative of our Party and all of our Democratic voters.

Pinellas Democrats have long understood and supported this fundamental change at the State Party, and we were proud to cast our votes in support of the amendment at Saturday’s meeting.

This is an exciting time at the Florida Democratic Party! We look forward to the work ahead to expand our Party and will keep you posted about the changes.

Training

Monthly PCDEC Precinct Committee Person Training

The foundation of the Democratic party is the Precinct Committee Person (aka PCP). PCP's serve as leaders of the most crucial political unit of government, the precinct.

Your trainer for this event is Barbara Scott, previous Chair of the Pinellas County Democratic Party, leader of the 2020 Blue Wave in Pinellas, and organizer extraordinaire!

This is a hybrid event and we highly recommend attending in person. Before the training, please be sure to download/bookmark our Precinct Committee Person Handbook as it's full of helpful information, links and resources to reference at your finger tips! http://bit.ly/PCPHandbook

This returning Precinct Committee Person training will be held every month, on the Saturday after our monthly general meeting, fresh for all new (and not-so-new!) PCP's.

If you'd like to attend the May 27th training, please sign up via the Mobilize link below.

May PCP Training
Additional Training can be found from the National Democratic Training Committee. The NDTC offers training sessions open to any Democrat looking to make a change in their community. No litmus test. No cost. Their online and in-person options aim to fit each Democrat's needs.

A New Ballot Measure for 2024:
ABORTION RIGHTS

As you may have seen in the news, the Florida reproductive rights movement is launching a ballot initiative campaign to protect access to abortion and ensure our personal medical decisions are ours and ours alone to make.

Time and time again, our state government has chosen to ignore the will of Floridians by passing increasingly restrictive laws to limit access to abortion. Extremist legislators have done this despite polling — and election results —  that have shown the majority of Florida voters support access to abortion. With this ballot initiative, Floridians will reclaim our right to control our medical decisions, our lives, and our futures.

To get on the ballot, more than 900,000 petition forms will need to be completed by Florida voters and the ballots must be from all parts of Florida. This is being organized by a new coalition "Floridians Protect Freedom" (FPF).

Both Pinellas DEC offices will be Petitions Collection Hubs for FPF -- both offices will be places to pick up blank petition forms and deliver completed ones. The North County office will be open Monday-Thursday, 1-4pm, South County office will be open Monday-Friday, 10-1pm and Saturday's from 10-12. Be sure to check back often as office hours are expanding weekly.

We need all Pinellas Dems on board with getting out in the community to get these petitions completed by registered voters.

Join FPF to learn about how we will get abortion access on the ballot for 2024!
