ALPA Exhibition hits NT Classrooms

The Gumurr’manydji Manapanmirr Djäma (Making Success Business Together) photographic exhibition has been rolled out to NT schools as an educational resource. The virtual gallery was created after popular demand for the exhibition to be more accessible to students and people across the country.

Recently ALPA and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory headed to Ramingining School to test its first classroom learning experience with students and teachers.

Ramingining School Year 9 student, Harvey Malibirr said “The [online] gallery was fun. I liked learning about our people from different communities. I liked it when I recognised family in the photos too. I want to finish the quiz.”

Daphne Malibirr, ALPA Ramingining Director said “This gallery is a good thing for our kids. It means they can learn from our ancestors about the way we used to do things and where we have come from. It’s important for them to know their story through the photos and be able to pass down these stories. They’ve heard of the stories about our ancestors doing fishing business and working on farms but now they can see it in the photos.”

ALPA’s Media and Communications Specialist and the ALPA Training team also created resources for students to use whilst experiencing the online gallery and to enhance their learnings of Yolŋu culture and history.

Guŋga’yunga Djamarrrkuḻiny Going Strong

ALPA’s East Arnhem Land Youth Model (Guŋga’yunga Djamarrrkuḻiny) is off to a great start in 2023, with 27 activities currently running across four East Arnhem Land communities.

One of these is the Ngarawudhunpay Miyalk and Dirramu program in Milingimbi, which aims to provide fun and engaging after school activities for djamarrkuli (young people), such as beach games, camp breakfasts and assistance getting to school, team walks/runs and sports like volleyball and baseball.

The program has had great engagement, with 15-25 young people attending each session. These allow djamarrkuli to come together for energetic, after-school activities, which aims to curb anti-social behaviours and subsequent school absenteeism.

Leadership Coordinator, Jane Miya says “The kids love the activities and are always asking when I am doing it next.”

Washing Machine Service Arrives in Gapuwiyak

Something very special recently arrived in the community of Gapuwiyak – our very own Orange Sky truck, which is equipped with washing machines and dryers, free for community members to use.

The truck has already completed over 200 loads of washing in its first two weeks, providing an important health and sanitation service for the community. For example, the truck has been able to visit and support  families to reduce skin infections and create service accessibility to those with disabilities.

This fantastic new service is part of CDP’s Trialling Pathways to Real Jobs Program, and employs five staff on real wages and conditions, who are now running the service by themselves.

We look forward to working with many others in the community to help them access this exciting new service.

ALPA & Territory Families Collaborate Emergency Flood Response for Remote NT Communities

When heavy rain caused major flooding in the remote NT communities of Daguragu, Kalkarindji and Pigeon Hole earlier this year our ALPA team were there to respond.

The flooding resulted in communities being evacuated, with townships submerged underwater and many people losing their homes and most of their belongings. In response, ALPA stepped up with the NT Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities to deliver and replace essential household items.

ALPA staff, along with Neil Mansell Transport drivers, quickly delivered four full trucks over two days to the Kalkaringi Store, carrying approximately $170K worth of household essentials for distribution to the effected communities, including whitegoods and bedding.

This was a huge feat for all involved, and despite facing road closures, damaged causeways and crossings, the team was able to ensure that properties were fit for living when community members returned to their homes.

Thank you to our road logistics provider Neil Mansell Transport for your continued backing and prompt response supporting ALPA, and most importantly our remote communities.

Empowering Communities: Community Engagement Team Leads Strengths-Based Consultation

ALPA’s Community Engagement Team has been hard at work, completing a comprehensive community consultation to help shape our training initiatives.

The insights gathered from the consultation have highlighted a strong desire among community leaders to see their family members move into positions of greater responsibility, such as middle management positions. However, Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN), and IT skill development were also identified as crucial barriers to this progression.

We believe that by addressing these barriers, we can open doors to promising opportunities for career growth and success.

These consultations were undertaken as part of ALPA’s application for a grant under the Federal Government’s Indigenous Skills and Employment Program (ISEP). A substantial 348 community leaders and members provided important feedback on current employment barriers, preferred learning styles and arrangements. Key insights included a clear desire to have training delivered by Yolŋu and Balanda together, and members identifying workplace-based learning as the most appropriate and effective method.

We would like to thank all community members for their time and providing such meaningful direction. With our proven track record of providing top-quality training across Arnhem Land, we're confident in our ability to make a difference.

Stay tuned for updates!

Sharing the Manapan Story with ABC’s Landline Program

Back in March of this year, the ABC travelled to Milingimbi Island to learn about the Manapan story. The ABC team were able to see first-hand the visionary work Manapan does each day in our Workshop, from going out bush to source timber, to placing the finishing touches on sophisticated tables adorned with intricate, hand-carved designs.

On Sunday May 21, ABC aired the Manapan story on their Landline Program, showcasing Manapan’s beautiful pieces and talented craftsmen. This program provides special insight into what work is involved day to day for the craftsmen, and our commitment to running a sustainable and self-sufficient business that is embedded in the community. Hear exactly what the team has to say by watching the video here.

Meet Mervin!

Mervin is a local Milingimbi man who has dabbled in numerous labouring roles with contractors in community over the last few years. From this, Mervin has gained many skills and lots of knowledge that he brought with him when he decided to join in on CDP activities at the beginning of the year.

Mervin’s dedication and hard work quickly led to a paid employment at Rulku Lodge as a Groundsman!  Mervin has been employed for three months now and  has proved to be nothing short of amazing at the work he does. He is loving being able to make the grounds look clean and tidy for visitors staying in Milingimbi.

“He is always at work early, Mervin is consistent and very punctual”, says Josephine Baker, Rulku Lodge Manager.

Mervin is currently working 20+ hours per week, but this isn’t enough! He has asked for additional hours of evening and/or weekend work so that he is able to keep himself busy.

Rulku Lodge and CDP work very closely to enable employment pathways and support staff into job opportunities. Thank you CDP for your teamwork!

Bukmak Constructions’ Commitment to Galiwin’ku

Bukmak Constructions started in 2017, and one of its founding goals was to resurrect the trades skills that many Yolŋu community members had seen in their family members before them, while they were growing up. Today, these aspirations still guide Bukmak’s work and are pursued every day as we continue to provide local employment and training on site to employees. At Bukmak, we’ve found that the best learning is done on site, through hands-on and practical learning with the support and encouragement of our mentors.

Indigenous employment with Bukmak in Galwin’ku was recently recorded at over 40%, an impressive number that we are committed to increasing each week on site. Part of this commitment to local employment saw Bukmak’s presence at the annual Galiwin’ku Careers Expo, where some of our tradesmen and mentors engaged with the community’s aspiring young people. The Expo supported conversations that encouraged soon to be graduates to explore a career with Bukmak Constructions. It was incredible to speak with so many interested and curious young adults who are the future of Galiwin’ku.

Ramingining Health Lab

In the last week of April, ALPA Nutrition supported the Menzies Health LAB and the Miwatj Public Health Team at the Ramingining School Health and Careers Expo. It was a great success as students were able to participate in a range of health-related activities including testing their levels of hydration, seeing the ageing process if they choose to drink alcohol, smoke or eat unhealthy foods, seeing what is inside a cigarette and what it can do to your body, as well as an exercise station.

Students were engaged in all of the activities, which aimed to show how our lifestyle choices and food can impact our health. There was plenty of fruit and vegetables provided for the students to snack on throughout, with carrot sticks being a crowd favourite. ALPA’s stall included apple slinkies and health promotion from the Good Food Strong Bodies initiative.

It was a great opportunity for ALPA staff member Leonie to be upskilled in health promotion, as she is training to be a Good Food Person. She did an incredible job in translating the health messages to students and learning what is expected during a health promotion session.

The Health LAB will be visiting Galiwin’ku in May on #WorldNoTobaccoDay, which ALPA will again be supporting.
