Reservoir’s undefeated season came to a heartbreaking end in the 3A state championship game [May 26], losing to Damascus, 2-0. Neither team could muster much hitting, but the Swarmin’ Hornets scored two runs on three hits, and the Gators stranded all four of their base runners.
While the state championship was the ultimate goal, the Gators and Coach Julie Frisvold should be lifted and celebrated for such an outstanding season, finishing 23-1, registering the second best record in county history, second to the only softball state champion this county has ever produced, the 2007 Hammond Bears, led by future Michigan Wolverine Stephanie Speierman.
The state crown has been incredibly elusive for the county’s best on the diamond, falling to 1-13 in the state title game. The Gators advanced to the 2021 3A state title game, before falling to Chesapeake, 3-1. Atholton has lost four times in the final, while both Centennial and Mt Hebron have each dropped three games in the state championship game.
While it won’t mean anything to the kids today or tomorrow, or even next week or next year, but the Gators produced the second best season any county team has ever produced in the 47 seasons of MPSSAA softball. Seniors Maggie Frisvold and Courtney Johnson, both UMBC commits, finished with a three-year record of 54-3 record with the Gators, and stringing together three undefeated regular seasons. Frisvold finishes a two stretch with a 31-2 record from the circle, and will go down as one of the best players this county has ever seen.
The Gators faced some adversity after Damascus took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning, with the Swarmin’ Hornets scoring on a two-out double. The Gators went scoreless through three innings before getting a player in scoring position. But, in the bottom of the fourth, the Gators were gifted two base runners on errors, and had them on second and third base, before the Hornets first baseman snared a liner to end the inning.
The Swarmin’ Hornets pitcher helped herself with a solo shot in the top of the fifth, and the Gators managed just one hit the rest of the way, a single by Frisvold, the only player to reach base in the final three innings. Frisvold struck out 11 Swarmin’ Hornets in her final high school game.
Hats off to one of the two best softball teams this county has ever seen.

Varsity Tennis
Exciting news from the Gator Tennis Team! Last year, for the first time in school history, our girls and boys teams both achieved winning records in the same season! At the beginning of the season, the team set a goal to improve that mark by at least one win for each team.
The boys had a huge win 4-1 in their final match against Centennial to make sure they hit that mark. They finished the season with an 11-6 record and finished #4 in the county.
The girls team surpassed their goal winning 5 more matches then last year finishing with an impressive 13-4 record (best record for the girls' team since the school opened) AND they finished top 3 in the county with a massive 3-2 win over Centennial in their final match of the season. This was also the first time both the boys and girls team defeated Centennial Tennis in school history!
A huge shout-out goes to Kiersten Tambe and Cassie Dragulescu! Both of these young ladies went undefeated for the season at first and second singles! Congratulations to both of them! This is a very difficult feat in the HOCO Tennis world!
