A DISCUSSION ABOUT LOCAL FOOD

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN HELPING TO INCREASE OUR LOCAL FOOD SUPPLY?
Sustainable Brampton has long wanted to establish a commercial food growing project to improve the secure supply of locally grown food.
Most food consumed in this area is bought in large supermarkets. These have long and precarious supply chains from growing areas where temperatures are now rising. This is starting to be reflected in insecure supplies and higher costs.
This has contributed to a rise in food poverty, with community activity in Brampton now providing a Food Larder, an Affordable Food Hub and a Foodbank for those in difficulty. This situation looks set to get worse.
Now is a good time to revive the idea of the local commercial growing of more vegetable and fruit to supply local people.
Two current projects may provide an opportunity to assist:
- A Zero Carbon Cumbria project for expanding locally grown vegetable and fruit “box schemes”, now operating in the Penrith and Kendal areas.
- Brampton and Beyond Energy’s plans to install an Anaerobic Digester near Brampton, which could provide power and heat to assist the operation of an adjacent market garden.
To be ready to take advantage of these opportunities, it would make sense to begin considering the research and development of the food options now.
The idea is to establish a small group of Sustainable Brampton Supporters who want to be involved in exploring the possibilities.
