A Sneak Peak of May 14, 2023

Sixth Sunday of Easter
Scripture Lesson:   Acts 17:22-31 & John 14:15-21
Sermon: “The Spirit of Truth”

“[Paul’s] general practice, when entering a new city, was to make his way to the synagogue, set up camp, and immediately begin to argue about the scriptures with anyone who happened to be there. He argued in Corinth, he argued in Ephesus. And he was good at it—really good. Paul was a lawyer; he could argue for three weeks without stopping, if necessary, and sometimes did. It was a homiletical tactic that worked for him, or at least came naturally. And if sometimes the citizens of a place tired of it, as happened in Thessalonica around the time our story begins, if they decided that his arguments were offensive and his presence no longer welcome—well, Paul was used to that, too. He knew how to leave town in a hurry if he had to. He knew how to shake the dust from his feet and move on to the next place.”

Church World Service Blanket Sunday

Mother’s Day May 14, 2023
“And don't forget to do good and share with those in need." — HEBREWS 13:16
For over 75 years, Church World Service has been helping people of faith bring God’s hope and healing to people in the U.S. and around the world. When difficult times happen, a kind and loving response can make all the difference. That’s why the CWS Blankets program was created—to give a kind, loving and tangible response to someone facing a difficult time, reminding them that they are not alone. Through the generosity of CWS partner organizations, congregations and individual supporters, our most vulnerable neighbors around the world can feel safe and keep warm with fresh linens and clean sleeping quarters. When our neighbors are in need, even $10 for a single blanket goes a long way.
The Missions Committee will be collecting donations on Mother’s Day, May 14, 2023.

Covid Protocol

Masks are once more “Optional”.  Please feel free to either wear a mask, or not, according to your comfort and preference.

UCC offers seed grants for churches to host Ukrainian refugees

by Connie Larkman | published on May 2, 2023

People of the United Church of Christ have been generous in their support of the denomination’s emergency appeal for Ukraine. Donors, in just over two years, have given more than $3.15 million to assist the people of that country displaced by war. Local churches now have an opportunity to use some of those gifts to help sponsor Ukrainian refugees here in the United States.

“The UCC is providing churches with a grant of up to $2,000 per individual,” said the Rev. Irene Willis Hassan, who leads UCC refugee and migration ministries. She suggested that the UCC allocate some of the appeal money domestically as a way to support churches in an evolving private sponsorship resettlement model the U.S. government is using.

Under current guidelines that the Department of Homeland Security has set up for Uniting for Ukraine, potential sponsors must show funds of $2,275 per person in declared accounts to host a Ukrainian in this country. And while demonstration of those banked funds per individual is a requirement to qualify, the actual cost of sponsorship could be more or less than that amount. Congregations can use the UCC grant money to set up such an account.

The Ukrainian Sponsorship Seed Grant program currently has $50,000 to distribute to churches who would like to become sponsors. Willis Hassan said churches can apply for up to $20,000 to host 10 people. Engagement is suggested for 90 days but can run up to two years.
