Dear <<First Name>>,

Two days ago the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s two energy reporters put together a great piece on how the new climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act, can help you save money and use less energy. It was a full page spread including tables and links to help you figure out what money, both in the form of tax rebates for higher income folks with tax liabilities, and direct discounts for those with no to low tax liabilities, is available. This article made a point that I have not seen elsewhere:

“There is a yearly cap on tax credits. There is no lifetime cap, so improvements could be spread over a number of years to get maximum benefit. Make a plan.”

Summer rate increases

I also want to alert everyone that we are 3 weeks away from summer rates which are double winter rates. This information is only found in your bill insert, and who reads those?!?

Here is a recap of what's happening on your bills this year and next:

  1. The 2022 rate increase of $4/mo. began in January (permanent, and increasing to $9/mo. Jan. 2024 and $15/mo. January 2025)

  2. The fuel cost recovery surcharge of $16/mo. beginning June 1 (surcharge is for 3 years assuming the PSC votes on May 16 to approve)

  3. Plant Vogtle’s Unit 3 construction costs of $5/mo. will be added to our bills 30 days after commercial operation. (projected for June, lasts 60 years)

  4. Plant Vogtle’s Unit 4 construction costs & cost overruns of $20/mo. will be added to our bills 30 days after Unit 4 commercial operation ($20 for Unit 4 - 60 years). Note that cost overruns have not been approved and will be a battle before the PSC commencing this fall.

Total increases to our bills are $25/mo. in 2023 ($4/mo. 2022 rate increase + $16/mo. fuel cost surcharge beginning June 1 +$5/mo. Unit 3 Plant Vogtle – likely July).

Total with Unit 4 in 2024 is $50/mo. if all cost overruns are approved by the PSC, which should not be approved.  More on that another time.

Note if you use more electricity than the “average” of 1000kWh/month your bill increase will be higher, if less lower (of course).

I hope this is helpful – let me know if you want leads to the best solar panel companies, and see the AJC article for ways to save money.
