We have worked 40 days without a work-related injury or accident.

 

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
 
This week the Public Works Department continued its sweeping program for two days until experiencing a breakdown. This is still being evaluated. Roadside mowing has begun for the season as the grass is starting to grow. Tree trimming took place on Heron Hill Road and North Pond Road. The crew worked on hot asphalt road patching and repairing lawn damage from the winter plowing. The unimproved section of School House Road is being cleared of fallen trees and brush, and we plan on adding material for road bedding next week. 

On May 20th, the Department is holding its annual food drive and Touch a Truck, to recognize Public Works week which runs from May 21-27. The event takes place at the Hebron Fire Department on Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Public Works equipment and Fire Department apparatus will be on display for families and children.

 
WETLANDS AGENT
 
Activity items for inclusion in the weekly report:
  1. Made 2 regulatory compliance jurisdictional determinations with corresponding site visits
  2. Provided administrative and logistical support to the Conservation and Inland Wetlands Commission
  3. Reviewed forestry operations with a private timber harvest
  4. Coordinating with Counsel regarding a conservation easement dispute settlement
  5. Monitored beaver activity at several areas
  6. Drafting Annual Report 
  7. At the request of a potential property purchaser, researched Town regulations on animal keeping and acreage requirements
  8. Inspected revegetation and landscaping efforts near five sewer line pumping stations
  9. Advised a potential property purchaser on Inland Wetland requirements
  10. Aided the Hebron Pollinator Pathway organization with the Commission review and permissions process for a grant-funded landscape / demonstration project
  11. Effected routine sediment and erosion control adherence checks relative to previously issued permit conditions of approval
  12. Coordinating with CT DOT toward the redress of a blocked culvert situation
  13. Attended an EPA / DEEP training session on water quality sampling and data collection regarding cyanobacteria blooms in area lakes
  14. Conducted periodic inspections and patrols relative to wetlands violations, ATV usage on Town lands and illegal dumping
PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

 
The Hebron Planning and Zoning Commission approved two permits at their May 9, 2023 Regular Meeting:
  • A new wall mounted sign and a replacement ground mounted sign at 117 Main Street.
  • A Site Plan Modification to replace playground equipment at Veteran’s Memorial Park at 66 Wall Street. Work is set to commence in the Fall.
 
The Hebron Planning and Zoning Commission also received a new application for Special Permit from the Hebron Lions Agricultural Society for a Temporary Liquor Permit at the Hebron Fair, September 7-10, 2023. A public hearing has been scheduled for June 13, 2023.

 

FIRE DEPARTMENT
 
This week the fire department responded to 10 EMS, 3 fire alarms, 2 motor vehicle accidents, 2 list assists, one smoke odor investigation and 1 motor vehicle fire.

Registration is open for our 2023 summer camps, including Summer Adventure Camp and all of variety of specialty camps. Looking forward to a great summer!
 
Therapy Dog Reading - Come meet Sheena the therapy dog! You will have a chance to read your favorite book to her and her dog friends! Learn the difference between a therapy dog, service dog, emotional support dog and a lovable household pet! Bring your favorite book or choose one of ours!!
"Sometimes all you need is a helping paw when learning to read. Children read aloud to therapy dogs to boost literacy skills and confidence." June 3, 10 – 11 a.m. Burnt Hill Park Pavilion.
 
Home Alone Safety - Home Alone Safety for Kids is a unique class for boys and girls ages 8-13, who will be staying home alone. This interactive course will cover safety concerns parents have when their children are left by themselves and how to deal with them. Each student will receive a workbook that covers house key safety, outdoor and indoor and safety (including kitchen), gun safety, fire safety, gas leaks, first aid kit essentials, phone, and internet safety. Monday, May 15th from 5-6:30 p.m. Gilead Hill School, PREP Room. Cost $45.
 
Babysitters Training – This course is for children ages 11-17. This is an entry level course intended to teach age-appropriate skills necessary to care for children of all ages using team babysitting, mother’s helper, and individual babysitting concepts. The course focuses on safety with emphasis on prevention. Basic first aid, including adult and child CPR. Thursday, June 29th from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Gilead Hill School, Art Room. $80.
 
Golf Clinic - We will focus on the foundation and setup of a good golf swing, strike principles, and short game techniques. While aimed at beginners, this can apply to golfers at all levels!  *Limited number of clubs available for use or bring your own!  Tuesdays, May 23-June 20, 4:45-6 p.m. Ages 6-15.  Thursdays, May 25-June 22, 6:15-7:30 p.m. Ages 16+  Minnechaug Golf Course, $199.
 
Summer Adventure Camp - Join us for an awesome summer full of sports, games, nature, arts & crafts, field trips, theme days, friends and more. 8 weeks, June 26-August 18th. 6:45 a.m.-5 p.m. Registration begins Monday, April 3, 8am. Must register in advance.  
 
Summer of Swish Basketball Camp - Join Shaun Keane for the annual Raptor coed basketball camp! Players will not only improve on their skillset but develop new skills and a deeper understanding of the game through enjoyable activities, drills, and games. Each participant receives a t-shirt! Daily prizes will be awarded to our skills competition champions in their respective age bracket! Trophies will be awarded at the end of the week to our FT champion in their respective age bracket! June 19-22, 8 a.m-12:00 p.m. RHAM High School Gym, $110.    
 
Football Camp - Join Coach Fleming, RHAM Football's head coach, and the RHAM football players at Football Camp! No Pads Needed! Each child will receive a t-shirt.  June 26-30, 8:00-11:30 a.m., RHAM High School Field. $125.
 
Crafting Camp – Join us as we craft away the day! Each day we will craft a variety of items based on the theme for the day. Some themes to look forward to are a camping day, summer craft day and crafting around the world. Come and create with us! June 26-30, 8:30-11:30 a.m., Douglas Library Community Room, $130.

Girl’s Volleyball Camp – Join RHAM Girl’s Volleyball in this fun informative camp to learn the game of volleyball. The philosophy of the camp is to teach proper skill and technique through competitive games and drills. Grades 7-12, July 10-13, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m., RHAM HS Gym. $150.
 
Minds in Motion RE/CO Robot Camp - Build and take home your very own RE/CO Robot!  RE/CO robot is a mechanical off-roading adventure!  It comes equipped with an infrared sensor and artificial intelligence.  Its ability to be controlled wirelessly, and its tank-like tracks, make it perfect for rugged conditions!   With the wireless remote control added, RE/CO Robot can access new play modes like storytelling, singing, dancing, and even programming.  Students can enjoy guiding it over all sorts of terrain or allow the friendly robot to lead the way, using its infrared sensor to find a clear path in patrol mode.  For parents who look to get the most out of their children’s time, RE/CO Robot is a great all in one package!  It combines assembling 106 pieces, STEAM learning with infrared sensors, programming with easy directional commands, and having fun with the freedom of a handy wireless remote control!

Minds in Motion Future Engineers - If you like to create and build things, this program is for you!  Take home your very own engineering kit!  You will build up to 8 working models including a material lift, stationary bike, crane bridge, construction crane, and a windmill!  With the aid of your instructor and the easy-to-follow manual, you will learn different scientific principles involving pulleys and mechanics.  You will also learn about basic circuits as you construct a Maze Challenge, Flying Disc, Turbo Air, and Alarm System with our STEM Lab kit!  As future engineers, the STEM lab will teach you how to comprehend a schematic diagram and interpret the flow of electricity.  Design your own diagrams and watch your confidence soar as you transform wires, springs, and plastic parts into fully functioning circuits.  Come obtain the necessary skills and experience to take on the technological challenges of the future! Ages 8-12, July 10-14, 12:30-3:30 p.m. Gilead Hill School, Art Room. $145.
 
Nerf Zone and Schoolyard Games Camp - In this camp, the kids will participate in a variety of nerf blaster and backyard games. Some of the games will incorporate both nerf blasters with the backyard game. Some of the backyard games we will play include wiffle ball, home run derby, basketball games, dodgeball and capture the flag. This will be an eventful camp! July 3-7, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. $120.

Building Up S.T.E.A.M Lego Camp - In this camp children are working independently and cooperatively as they begin to explore simple machines using LEGO Early Childhood Materials. Your child will have the opportunity to work with and bring home evidence-based lab sheets to share to continue the learning process outside of camp. Projects may include spin tops, motorcycles, and hockey players. Ages 5-6, July 17-21, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. Gilead Hill School, Art Room, $140.
 
S.T.E.A.M. Works Using Lego Summer Camp - In this camp children are working with standard LEGO materials to problem solve pre-engineering challenges involving structure, levers, gears, pulleys, and other elements of simple machines. Your child will have the opportunity to work with and bring home evidence-based lab sheets to share to continue the learning process outside of camp. Projects may include drawbridges, flywheel cars, and amusement park rides. Ages 7-10, July 17-21, 1-4 p.m. Gilead Hill School, Art Room. $140.
 
Hebron Day and Farmers and Artisans Market - We are currently accepting vendor applications for our Farmers and Artisans Market.  The market will be held the first Saturday of each month from June – October, at Hebron Elementary School. We are also accepting vendor applications for Hebron Day, Saturday, June 17th. Located at Burnt Hill Park. Applications can be found on our website.
