Frederik Philipsprijs Rob Holtackers

Dr.ir. Rob Holtackers has won the Frederik Philipsprijs from the NVvR (Dutch Radiology Society) for his thesis 'Visualising the Invisible: dark-blood late gadolinium enhancement MRI for improved detection of subendocardal scar' The jury praised the technique for making scar tissue visible, which his research has yielded, and which can be easily and quickly applied in practice. Jury chairman Mathias Prokop and Arjon Hoekstra presented him with the prize and a check worth €4,000 on behalf of Philips, as well as a beautiful statuette.

Processing times for vacancies and promotion payments

As the summer holidays are approaching, we would like to ask you to bear in mind that vacancies and promotion payment requests may take longer due to holidays of CARIM and finance employees.
Submit your vacancy requests well in advance please.

Please note that Petra Suurmond and Anke Neekman will enjoy their summer holiday during 24 July - 7 August.

Should you have any questions don't hesitate to contact the CARIM secretariat at secretariaat-carim@maastrichtuniversity.nl

Prize Nikki Werkman ISDF

On May 13, Nikki Werkman (Department of Clinical Pharmacy) won second prize for best oral presentation for her research entitled: “The use of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors or glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonists and the risk of lower limb amputations in Denmark” during the international symposium on the diabetic foot (ISDF) in The Hague.

Her study shows that SGLT2 inhibitors do not increase the risk of amputations and that the GLP1 agonists may actually reduce this risk compared to sulfonylurea derivatives.

ERC Starting Grant 2024 Training

Are you a talented early-career scientist (2-7 years post-PhD) who has already produced excellent supervised work, is ready to work independently and shows potential to be a research leader? The ERC Starting Grant could be for you.

If you are planning to submit an ERC StG 2024 application, you are cordially invited to attend the Yellow Research training day on June 14th.

This training is a deepening of the May 24th information session, and follows on from the online animated tutorial, which will be send to registered participants before the F2F training. Please note that places are limited and that we prioritise those candidates who have participated in the information session. Other places will be allocated on a first come, first serve basis.

This workshop is primarily intended for researchers who have the ambition to submit an ERC Starting grant proposal. Participants may bring a printed copy of their CV/Track Record (preferably in ERC format) to the training for a peer review.

The Training will take place on a central location in Maastricht. Please register here: https://www.aanmelder.nl/145463

Upon registration, you will receive all the information you need for your attendance during the day.

Prize Anouk Achten NVVC

Anouk Achten (Dept. of Cardiology) won the prize for best presentation in the heart failure group at the NVVC Spring Congress 2023 with her abstract on Cardiac Amyloidosis.
This presentation showed the importance of early diagnosis of patients with ATTR Amyloidosis and the first data of the MUMC+ Amyloidosis cohort.

Annual CARIM Symposium 2023 - Save the date!

It is with great joy that we announce the date of our annual CARIM symposium.

This year our CARIM symposium will take place on Wednesday 29 November 2023 at the Minderbroedersberg 4-6 - Save the date!

This year's Robert Reneman Lecture will be given by Mary Cushman, hematologist at the University of Vermont Medical Center and a professor of medicine and pathology at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM in Burlington, VT.
More information will follow soon.

Mosa Meat opens pilot-factory

The opening of a new pilot factory for cultured burgers on the edge of the Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus generated a lot of publicity this week. Including a large article in De Limburger and an interview with CEO Maarten Bosch at Eva Jinek. Logical, because with this opening Mosa Meat, a CARIM spin-off company, is taking an important step towards market introduction.

Clustering of Cardiac Transcriptome Profiles Reveals Unique: Subgroups of Dilated Cardiomyopathy Patients

Dilated cardiomyopathy is a heterogeneous disease characterized by multiple genetic and environmental etiologies. The majority of patients are treated the same despite these differences. The cardiac transcriptome provides information on the patient's pathophysiology, which allows targeted therapy. Using clustering techniques on data from the genotype, phenotype, and cardiac transcriptome of patients with early- and end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, more homogeneous patient subgroups are identified based on shared underlying pathophysiology. Distinct patient subgroups are identified based on differences in protein quality control, cardiac metabolism, cardiomyocyte function, and inflammatory pathways. The identified pathways have the potential to guide future treatment and individualize patient care.
