Grade 10 Sustainability Summit

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were created in 2015 as a global effort towards progress in environmental, political, and economic challenges.

This year the Grade 10 cohort has been working diligently on researching one of the five selected United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that are most connected to our English curriculum: quality education; gender equality; decent work and economic growth; reduced inequalities; or peace, justice and strong institutions. In doing so, Grade 10 has fostered an awareness of the issues which has encouraged them to take action in their community.

As part of this project, students were asked to compose a 2,000 words research paper that reflects their deep understanding of their respective goal.  ASV is proud to present these projects at the First Sustainability Summit that will take place on May 5, 2023, in the Athletic Center from 14:00-16:00.

Parents of Grade 10 students, please view the invitation and complete the registration form to be part of this experience with your child. The deadline to register to attend this event is Wednesday, May 3, 2023.

General Announcements

Holiday on Monday, May 1 (Labor Day)

We wish to remind all families that this coming Monday, May 1, 2023, is a national holiday in Spain and the school will be closed. Classes will resume on Tuesday.

PBIS Climate Questionnaire

ASV is committed to the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, a proactive approach to establishing routines and clear expectations to support an optimal learning environment.  The school established a PBIS Leadership Team four years ago and has been working closely with Dr. George Sugai, an international leader and published author on PBIS.

Each year, we have surveyed students and staff to obtain their feedback on PBIS.  This has helped us to understand perceptions about how PBIS is impacting our learning environment and has helped us to adjust our planning.

The PBIS Leadership Team would like to collect perception data from parents as well.  We ask you to complete the survey for each child you have at ASV, as you may find that your child’s experience is different at different grade levels.  The survey is very short and easy to complete in order that we can collect this data across the school, study it, and learn from it to help us improve.

CAS Projects

ASV Spring Clothing and Toy Drive (May 2 - 18, 2023)

It's Spring cleaning time! ASV would like to continue the tradition of supporting a clothing drive for the less fortunate that is hosted by El Faro Church in Valencia.  We ask families to make donations of gently-used clothing that is not damaged in any way to be brought to school. Students can bring the clothing to their homerooms. The clothes will be brought to Valencia and added to the collection at El Faro to be available for local families in need.

Also, prior to our next trip to Preventorio Infantil Ntra. Sra. del Amparo (Real de Gandía) on May 18, 2023, CAS students are also asking families to donate undamaged toys for the children there. The toys can also be brought to the homerooms where they will be collected by CAS students.

A time to care and a time to share. We thank all families in advance for their kindness and generosity!

Kinder Learning Showcase

Kinder classes have been working hard over the past few weeks studying plants and teen numbers. “In Science, we have been learning about plants, their five needs to grow and live and their life cycle. After returning from Spring Break, we planted seeds and we are completing observations like real scientists,” Ms. Alyssa Martinez describes. “We also have been learning about teen numbers in Math and building them with multiple manipulatives,” Ms. Celia Sanz says.

As a culmination of this work, parents were invited to attend the Kinder Learning Showcase on Friday, April 21, 2023. Students showed parents their seeds and plants and how scientists complete real observations. Then, they completed a cross curricular activity where parents shopped with their child at the plant store.

PK2 and PK1 Learning Showcases

PreKinder 1

PK2 is enjoying the new unit on Simple Machines. Through learning about Simple Machines, teachers and students will explore new vocabulary and scientific processes that are important and essential to learning and understanding the world around us.

As an introduction to this unit, parents were invited into classes on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, to attend the PK2 Winter Learning Showcase, and get a peek at how we will explore Simple Machines in the PK2 classroom. Parents participated in several activities and students enjoyed learning with them!
PreKinder 1

The PK1 Winter Showcase held on Friday, April 28, 2023, was a wonderful experience where the children shared the process of planting in our sensory garden through photos. Parents helped the children plant a seed to take home. Everyone enjoyed visiting the garden to see how the plants are thriving.

Thank you to all the parents who helped make this a memorable day for their children!

Learning Activities

Science in Grade 3

Grade 3 students have been learning about the states of water in science class. This week they made an experiment where they observed how water changes from liquid to gas as well as watching the mini cloud form as the water changes states. Students documented their observations and discussed how they thought water was able to do this!

May Book Madness

Beginning next Tuesday, May 2, 2023, students from Kinder through Grade 5 are participating in the May Book Madness tournament, a reading activity inspired by the famous March Madness college basketball tournament that takes place in the USA.  “May Book Madness pits favorite books from the library against each other in a literacy showdown. Students will vote between two books every week for four weeks,” Ms. Soraya Vitorino says to describe how the tournament will work.

The Grade 2 team has invited teachers in other grade levels to come and read to students. “With their help, students will flex their reading muscles and will choose their most enjoyable book among eight amazing finalists”.

Theater Play for Grades 5 and 6 Students

Students in Grades 5 and 6 have been introduced to performing arts and drama in their Spanish Language course.  To support these lessons, on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, they enjoyed a theater play offered at ASV by La Tourné Teatro. The play was Edward Scissorhands, which story emphasizes values like empathy and tolerance.

An ASV Student Team Will Represent Spain in the International Mathematical Modeling Challenge

The High School Math Department is happy to announce that the team composed of Claudia A., María C., and Iduna H. (Grade 11) has been selected to represent Spain in the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IMMC).  Our students have achieved this honor after passing prior stages of this competition and being one out of three student teams -as we shared in March 2023- qualifying to participate in the final challenge.

IMMC is a mathematical competition addressed to High School students interested in the use of mathematics to solve real-life problems. At each stage of the competition, participants must analyze a given situation and submit a modelization proposal.

“In this last challenge, there was like a plot of land and we were given terrain statistics and other factors”, Iduna H. describes. “We first had to develop a mathematical way to determine the best investment in this area,” Claudia A. says. Consequently, students had to connect Mathematics with what they are learning in other subjects, mainly Geography and Business Management. “We had to understand the terrain and calculate profit and payback,” María C. adds.

Claudia, María, and Iduna had permission to not follow their regular schedule on April 3 and 4, 2023, to focus on the resolution of the challenge. “We researched a lot about the place and there was also a lot of brainstorming,” Claudia describes. “We ended up writing all over the windows. There were equations everywhere!,” Iduna recalls.

This is the second time ASV reaches the final stages of IMMC. In this 2022-2023 academic year, it is remarkable that two teams (both with Grade 11 students) have qualified and participated in the final challenge. However, the IMMC revision team is limited to submitting two proposals to represent Spain in the international challenge. Congratulations to both ASV teams.

The ASV Library “Garbage Barge”

Students and teachers may have noticed a singular art project placed by the entrance of the ASV Library. The work combines the notice board created to participate in the One Book, One School initiative and “two images refiguring the photograph of the collected garbage into re-interpretations of the book Here Comes the Garbage Barge,” Mr. Alex Caamaño describes. “These photos have been digitally edited by two Grade 6 students that take part in the ASV Art Club”.

During the One Book, One School campaign, the Library team invited our students to leave wraps and packages and see how a small part of the school community can generate a significant amount of trash from everyday items.

Grades 6-10 Sports Day

This week, Grades 6 through 10 participated in Sports Day which took place at the sports center in Puzol. Over 350 students were in four mixed teams that competed in track and field events during the morning and team sports in the afternoon.

The Physical Education department was supported by the teaching staff throughout the day and ASV students did a fantastic job of competing with excellent effort and respect.

The day saw a number of school track and field records broken.

ASV to Europaschule Gymnasium next week

What began last year with a pen pal relationship is now entering its second round: our Global Exchange Programme is taking a group of ASV students to Gommern, Germany from May 3 to 12, 2023.

Our ASV students will enjoy German hospitality. "Visits to Berlin and Magdeburg are planned, as well as getting to know rural Germany. Nature, culture, and an insight into the German school system await us," Ms. Bozena Schmidt announces.

The students are already looking forward to using their extensive knowledge of German and will get to know our partner school Europaschule Gymnasium Gommern on our first day!
