VIRTUAL COMMUNITY MEETING

Climate Conscious Shipping

Friday, May 5
9:30 - 10:00 am PST

Register Here

Shipping is often an inevitable part of exhibition planning and art commerce, but cutting emissions and waste while moving artworks around the world is not only possible but necessary. Join us on May 5th to hear from Jamie Harker, Chair of the Green Subcommittee at ICEFAT, a global trade organization for art logistics experts. Harker will discuss shippers' ongoing efforts to make transportation more sustainable and introduce a range of steps shippers and clients can take together to minimize our sector's impact on the planet.

Jamie Harker is Chair of ICEFAT's Green Subcommittee and a Project Manager at Atelier 4 in Los Angeles.

A+CA's Community Meetings are co-hosted with Galleries Commit (NY) and Gallery Climate Coalition (LA).

Collating expertise and insights from across the visual arts and environmental sectors, this new resource has been developed by the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) to support anyone within the public or non-profit visual arts sector who feels determined to take urgent and effective climate action, in line with principles of justice and the latest climate science.

It will also aid efforts at fair and equitable operations by embedding principles of social and environmental responsibility at every level of your organization. Download the Action Plan here.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Appoints Kelsey Shell as MOCA’s Environmental & Sustainability Strategist

A+CA co-founder Kelsey Shell has been named MOCA's Environmental & Sustainability Strategist, a first-of-its-kind position in a United States museum. The MOCA Environmental Council, an advisory group focused on climate, conservation, and environmental justice in support of the museum's mission, is funding the position. As Environmental & Sustainability Strategist, Shell's responsibilities include working on all facets of sustainability, climate and environmental justice programming, and environmentally focused exhibitions. Shell brings more than a decade of experience to MOCA, having previously served as Director of Public Art at Zlot Buell + Associates and co-founding the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) Los Angeles. This news makes it clear: our institutions' and associations' leaders are ready to move the sustainability standards and practices we need forward. Congratulations to Kelsey, the MOCA Environmental Council, and everyone at the Museum for charting a course that will bring one of our most esteemed California institutions into greater ecological harmony with its systems, bioregion, and community.

Dear Art + Climate Action...

What are some environmentally friendly alternatives to vinyl for exhibition signage? Can I recycle or repurpose old textiles from my studio? My gallery is in a rented space, can I switch to renewable energy? These are just a few of the questions we've received from artists and arts workers. Do you have a sustainability question? Send it to info@artandclimateaction.org and keep an eye out for responses here in the Art + Climate Action newsletter.
