NEW NEIGHBORHOOD GENERAL MEETINGS!

"GHNA Neighborhood Potluck"

We revamped our approach to our neighborhood-wide "meetings" with a new "GHNA neighborhood Potluck Gathering".

Grandview graciously hosted us again for a successful get together. We heard about Neighborhood Updates from Councilmember Justin Jones and welcomed Pasadena Water and Power representatives Ursula Schmidtt and Tim Wheeler to discuss the Lawn Replacement Program.

We all enjoyed the tasty contributions and had great participation from many neighbors including a few brand new to Garfield Heights! We also heard about our treasury reports and event updates from GHNA and Grandview.

Overall, this new format was a success and we look forward to our next gathering. We hope you can join us for the next one!

GARFIELD HEIGHTS HISTORIC BUS TOUR IS SELECTED AS A FINALIST!

Exciting news! Garfield Heights Neighborhood Association (GHNA) has been selected as a finalist  in the competition for national Neighborhood of the Year (NOTY) by the organization, Neighborhoods USA (NUSA) because of our excellent Pasadena Historic Bus Tour #2 last May!

The lead organizers of the Historic Bus Tour #2, Danny Parker and Lisa Mann, will travel to El Paso, TX in late May to compete in person to a panel of judges at the annual NUSA conference. The City of Pasadena Planning and Community Development department has generously offered to partially fund the trip.

The NOTY competition seeks neighborhood projects focusing on the social or cultural aspects of a neighborhood, including activities that make residents feel connected and fosters neighbors working together. The projects will be evaluated on several criteria including self-financing, innovation, community benefit, neighborhood involvement, and the potential to be replicated in other neighborhoods. Our Bus Tour seems to check all the boxes since it was fully-funded by the GHNA and organized and researched by neighbors. Since this year's NUSA conference theme is "Siempre Unidos: Embracing a Diverse Future," the Bus tour, which focused on the history of five ethnic communities in Pasadena, we think that GHNA has a good shot of winning the NOTY Award this year. And just to be finalists in the competition is a distinction and honor.

Pasadena's public access tv station, Pasadena Media, is shooting a video about the Bus Tour that will be part of the NOTY presentation. It includes Interviews with the Bus Tour guides and several neighbors who rode on the bus.

Please have a look at our webpage to see the information about all the locations we visited last May on the Bus tour

The 11 Board members, selected by Pasadena City Council, is comprised of one member from each of the seven districts, as well as four at-large members from any district in Pasadena.

Brandon Lamar is the District 3 tenant representative on the new Rental Housing Board. In addition, Allison Henry, who lives in Garfield Heights, has been selected to serve on the Rental Board as a member-at-large. HERE is the complete list of 11 members.

HOW TO REQUEST A PARKWAY TREE

Find out how to request a tree for your parkway
What is the parkway? The city-owned strip between the sidewalk and street

Recently a few parkway trees that line Marengo were lost due to disease, over-saturation and erratic growth.

With the loss of these trees we want to remind neighbors about the Pasadena Department of Urban Forestry and the work they do to sustain our beautiful trees in Pasadena. The City has made it very easy, and free, to order trees for your parkway.
  • Property owners can use the Pasadena Citizen Services app on their phone to remove a dead tree or request a new tree for their parkway.
  • Trees will be spaced a minimum of 15 feet apart.
  • Urban Forestry has a Master Plan for every block in Pasadena to achieve a more unified quality.
  • Each street has from one to three different designated tree species.
  • Just go to the Master Street Plan map HERE and fill in your address.
  • Next, click on the blue street line on your block to see the list of trees that are assigned to your block.
  • The City will water the plants for the first few years until they are established (though they encourage homeowners to supplement as needed.)
  • The City will also maintain and trim the parkway trees for their lifetime.

Spring is parkway tree planting season, so get your request in ASAP.

Trees combat global warming, provide clean air and shade, and sustain animal habitats for our San Gabriel foothill ecosystem! Trees are a long term investment in the neighborhood's beauty. Let's get planting!
