Also, we need your assistance with an upcoming project. We are once again going to be observing of the Board of Canvassers certification process after the May 2 election.

Observing the canvass is a great opportunity to further understand the election process and see what occurs after the votes are cast and counted on Election Day. We observed the Board of Canvassers after several elections and LWV volunteers that participated have found it very informative. If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer with LWV and help Empower Voters and Defend Democracy, please consider signing up to assist with this project.

What is the Board of Canvassers?
The Board of Canvassers consists of two members from each major political party and is appointed by the Board of Commissioners upon recommendation of the Kent County Clerk/Register and the chairs of the two parties. Board members serve four-year terms. The Board is responsible for canvassing and certifying election results and conducting recounts.

What will I do as an observer of the county canvass?
The county canvass is subject to the open meetings act and thus is open to the public. As an observer on behalf of the League of Women Voters, you will simply sit back and observe the process. The Board of Canvassers will be reviewing the materials from the May 2 Election which includes tabulator tapes, reports, poll books, and other documentation relating to the election.  You will be provided with a brief form to document your observations. No experience is required and it is a great way to learn more about the election process.

LWVMI is hoping that we can cover both Kent AND Ionia Counties if possible as they are trying to have a LWV presence at all county BOC meetings. If you are interested in volunteering for this important election project, please use the link here to sign up for a volunteer shift using Sign Up Genius. After signing up, additional information will be sent along to you.
