Greetings BeaconArts friends,

We can't believe it's already May! We are reveling in the warmer Spring weather and looking forward to another great Second Saturday. Check out what the community has planned and please join us as we celebrate the arts. Read on for more!

Second Saturday is May 13

Second Saturday is quickly approaching on Saturday, May 13 in Beacon. Be sure to check out our Second Saturday listings section on our site for more info and our full list of events. See below for a roundup of a few openings happening around town:

Exploring the twilight territory between consciousness and the subconscious, reality and fantasy, sleeping, waking, space and time, Innerhofer's SHADOWLAND is a haunting and surreal constellation of interactive photography and sound that will awaken your doppelganger.

Soft Assembly, handmade rugs and objects by Khara Gilvey, at Hudson Beach Glass

May 13, 5-7 pm at Hudson Beach Glass, 162 Main St. in Beacon

Aboudia Retrospective Exhibition at KuBe Art Center

May 13 at KuBe Art Center's Main Gallery, 211 Fishkill Ave. in Beacon

Abdoulaye Diarrassouba, known as Aboudia, chronicles the street scene in his city of Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire. In his vibrant, large-scale mixed-media paintings and drawings, which recall those of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Aboudia takes inspiration from the aesthetics of graffiti and traditional African carvings. He has depicted youths in his city’s toughest neighborhoods and the violent post-election conflict that ravaged Abidjan in 2011. Aboudia has exhibited widely across Côte d’Ivoire and in London, Paris, New York, and Marrakesh, among other cities.

Mexafubi: Monsters and Deities, by Frank Mysterio, at Clutter Gallery

May 13, 6-9 pm at Clutter Gallery, 163 Main St. in Beacon

A Fine Line: Graffiti and the Power of Dissent

May 13 at KuBe Art Center's Upstairs Gallery, 211 Fishkill Ave. in Beacon

This exhibition presents artists (including some BeaconArts members!) who use the power of line and gesture in their work to convey messages of subversion. How does the hand guide lines of dissent in contemporary art, and in what ways do artists use their personal language and gestures to speak out against conventions and injustice. Spanning from the personal to the political, an artist’s use of line and gesture has the power to shape society, and alter the way we see the world.

Heads up gallery and business owners: If you'd like to be included in our Second Saturday promotions — being part of our listings and Instagram posts — be sure to fill out this form each month with details and photos of your event. Deadline is the last day of each month (sorry, no exceptions), so please submit your June 2023 events now. Priority is given to BeaconArts members. And if you'd like to join BeaconArts as an artist, gallery or business member, details can be found here.

BeaconArts June Fundraiser

Mark you calendars! We're hosting a fun party and 2023 Bus Shelter Art Project Drive on Wednesday, June 21 at Dogwood. Our bus shelters, which highlight BeaconArts member artwork all around Beacon, are in need of a refresh and we're raising funds to make it happen. Stay tuned for more info!

Call for New Postcard Art Submissions

We're printing a new batch of art postcards to help inform the community about BeaconArts. Are you interested in having your art on this year's cards? All BeaconArts members are invited to submit an image for consideration. We'll be showing four different images on these postcards—and we'll give you credit, obviously! Please submit a high resolution image of your artwork by May 19th. Thank you for your interest and good luck!

Volunteer With BeaconArts

Lastly, BeaconArts is an all volunteer organization—including our board members—and we're looking for some help with a few ongoing projects. We're looking for some help with our upcoming June fundraiser, web development needs, grant writing and the Artist Member Exhibition in October, among others. If you have time, passion, interest and talents to share, please reach out to discuss how we might be able to collab. We'd love to work with you!

As always, thanks for reading and please feel free to forward this to any friends who want to join or donate to BeaconArts. We and the whole BeaconArts community appreciate your support.

Thanks, BeaconArts Board
