May is mighty like an eagle

Spreading wings and taking flight

It’s Mayday (and my mother-in-law’s birthday). Happy May Day, however you celebrate.

I’m celebrating by writing this email in a cafe and then picking up the littlest from her daycamp. And on Wednesday we all go to the magical Dutch theme park known as Efteling.

it’s been a busy period in our family, thanks to my intense course creation contract. Now done and available!

Next week Chiara starts a new full-time job, swinging the pendulum of family responsibility in my direction. So this week, while the girls are on on a school break, we’re enjoying a little rest in motion.

A couple of further items

  • I’ve been busy putting together some courses: storytelling, writing, public speaking, improv. Some in-person, and some online. Check the list out here and see if you want to join any. I’ve also got a sheaf of corporate public speaking and storytelling workshops coming up in the next six weeks, so I’m immersed in all kinds of practicing up on stories and speaking.

  • Last email I teased that I’d be running a two-day improv and storytelling workshop in Italian. Well, it happened. And… it went pretty well! I had a lot of fun, and the participants did as well. My vocabulary and clarity sure flagged toward the end of the second day, but even knowing that we did fantastic. As you can imagine, I’m quite proud.

  • The Confident Presenter — It’s been a good long while that I’ve been poking this along toward a final publishing push. Well, this is the push. If you want to join the Launch Team, check it out here. If you’ve already joined, thank you! More news coming soon. if you haven’t joined, expect more news once I get my schedule scheduled.

A thoughtful quote

I’m a real quote and aphorism enthusiast, so I thought it would behoove me to share some occasionally, as maybe you’ll enjoy thinking over some wise words too!

“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.” — Cormac McCarthy

Rarely has a quote been so pessimistic and life-affirming. I love how quickly this idea can help you reframe something shitty into something wonderful. Plus it gets you gently catastrophizing while simultaneously being grateful these nightmare scenarios haven’t materialized. All thanks to your rotten luck!

Mapfight — My brother shared this site with me. Compare regions, countries, cities, seas and so on.

Practical steps creative freelancers can take when work is quiet As I’m looking at my year to date, and what lies ahead, I see that my summer will be a bit quiet. Part of that is because I’ll be travelling and hanging with my family. And I’ll also be doing that because work will be quiet. So I’ll be following some of the advice here, and it helps shape downtime into something healthy.

Hundreds of free movies on YouTube — Speaking of downtime, why not turn a bit of that downtime into an opportunity to dive deep into all kinds of free films and short films.
