APRIL 2023 - NEWS AND UPDATES

Dear friends,

Please read below for our news and updates for the month of April.

FYF CELEBRATES YEZIDI NEW YEAR

FYF and Yezidis around the world celebrated the Yezidi New Year, or Çarşema Serê Salê, on Wednesday, 19 April. It is one of the most important Yezidi holidays - a time of renewal and hope that is held on a Wednesday in mid-April each year. FYF wishes all Yezidis a Happy New Year as the community continues to rebuild and recover.

YEZIDIS ABHOR FORCED CONVERSIONS IN AFRIN, SYRIA
FYF and other Yezidi organizations and activists abhorred a forced conversion of two Yezidi men in Afrin, Syria. Afrin is currently under the control of Turkish-backed militias, which include many former and current Al-Qaeda and ISIS members. Afrin used to host a significant Yezidi population that has dwindled since the Turkish invasion of that region in Syria. The two Yezidi men, pictured here with a local Sheikh, were reportedly pressured to convert to Islam or go to prison. Yezidis have suffered religious persecution for centuries.
FYF PARTICIPATES IN HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY IN WASHINGTON

FYF’s Executive Director Pari Ibrahim was invited to participate in the United States National Commemoration of the Days of Remembrance, established by the US Congress as the country's annual Holocaust commemoration. The event was organized by the US Holocaust Museum, which also marked its 30th anniversary. FYF has worked closely with the US Holocaust Museum on matters pertaining to Yezidis, as the Museum's Center for the Prevention of Genocide is mandated to address mass atrocities and genocides around the world.

REPORT HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR YEZIDI GENOCIDE ACCOUNTABILITY

A report from the International Bar Association released this month highlighted the need to continue the pursuit of justice and accountability in the aftermath of the Yezidi Genocide. The report included perspectives from FYF and other Yezidi organizations.

DID YOU KNOW?
FYF visited Al-Hol camp in Northeast Syria last month. Since that time, Yezidi families have reached out with information regarding family members they believe are currently in Al-Hol but have not yet self-identified to camp security out of fear for their safety. FYF will continue pursuing identification and rescue of missing Yezidis, including those who may be currently in Al-Hol camp.

Thank you all, as always, for your steadfast support for FYF and the Yezidi community.
Sincerely,

Pari Ibrahim
Executive Director
