Network Updates & Announcements

CAN (Clean Air Networks) Conference:

There’s still time to register for the CAN conference! This event (5-6th July 2023) will celebrate and reflect upon the work of the networks over the past few years, as well as looking ahead to the future role networks play in air quality research. You can register for the conference here.

We are excited to confirm keynote speakers Professor Roy Harrison (University of Birmingham) and Professor Anna Hansell (University of Leicester) for each day of the conference, respectively. Invited speakers across the conference programme have now been confirmed and it is great to see lots of HEICCAM representation. There is more information about the conference here.

Global Change Seminar in Edinburgh

On April 19th, HEICCAM hosted a Global Change Seminar in-person in Edinburgh. HEICCAM member Sumil Thakrar gave an engaging and interesting talk concerning ‘Food systems, land use, air quality, and human health.’ We all learned a lot about the economic and health impacts of air quality under different land usages. The talk was well attended by the University community, and we received lots of positive feedback afterwards.

Env. Epidemiology & Data Science vacancies at UCL:

The UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health is advertising for two vacancies that will contribute to the establishment of child health research using national, administrative databases enhanced with spatio-temporally fine environmental data in England. The posts are funded by Health Data Research-UK through the Social and Environmental Determinants of Health Research Driver Programme. The available posts are for a Research Fellow in Environmental Health Data Science (funded for 3 years) and a Senior Research Fellow in Environmental Epidemiology (funded for 5 years).

Post-doc opportunity at the University of Edinburgh:

There is currently a vacancy for a postdoctoral research fellow within the Particle Research Team at Edinburgh's Centre for Inflammation Research, to work on the SPF Clean Air consortium funded RESPIRE project. The research aim is to determine how air pollution exposures of pregnant women pass to the baby to affect organ development and poor health in childhood. Application deadline is May 9th and further details can be found here.

PhD opportunities at the University of Strathclyde:

The Strathclyde Centre for Doctoral Training (SCDT) in ‘Energy-efficient Indoor Climate Control for Optimised Health (EICCOH) are offering three 42-month fully funded PhDs available in the areas of indoor environment and net zero. The aim of this interdisciplinary SCDT is to meet the needs of the fast-growing green construction industry to optimise building performance and deliver net-zero buildings whilst promoting occupant’s health and wellbeing. The training will be led by experts in net-zero design, indoor air quality, building resilience, human behaviour, and data analytics. You can find more detail about these opportunities here

Innovate UK funding competition:

Innovate UK have launched a new clean air innovation competition funded by DEFRA. In the first phase of competition, organisations can apply for a share of £2 million to develop products or services that reduce the volume of harmful pollutants entering the atmosphere from domestic burning or agricultural practices. The competition closes on Wednesday, 24 May 2023. There are more details here.

Themes include health risks associated with inhalation of different types of airborne particles, Exposure Modelling and Air Pollution & Human Health. HEICCAM member Mark Miller will be speaking on Wednesday afternoon. Find out more here.

Healthy Buildings Europe

This conference is hosted at RWTH Aachen University under the auspices of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). This year's conference theme is “Beyond disciplinary boundaries – Transdisciplinary perspectives on multisensory stimulation for innovative and creative solutions in a Post-Covid era.” It will take place from 11-14th June, 2023 in Aachen (Germany). The campaign will also be encouraging people to visit the Clean Air Hub  to learn about air pollution and engage with their community. Keep an eye out for posts and events around the day!

Clean Air Networks Conference

The Clean Air Networks Conference will bring together HEICCAM and other Clean Air research networks to share insights on cross-cutting themes and develop research strategies for the future. Invites are being circulated to speakers and the programme has been confirmed. The conference will take place at the University of Birmingham's Edgbaston Park Hotel on 5-6th July, 2023. It will take place from 10-11th October, 2023 in Manchester and currently welcomes abstract submissions on a variety of topics, including Indoor Air Quality and Measurement and Assessment of Air Quality (incl. low-cost technologies). See here for the full call.

Future seminars

We have plans for a series of short form (15 minutes or less) ‘work in progress’ talks for online lunchtime seminars. If you would be interested in sharing your work with the network, getting some interesting feedback and different perspectives, let us know and we will facilitate a seminar. Alternatively, if you have a suggestion of a speaker (for a long or short talk), let us know.

Our sister network TAPAS organises a range of interesting online seminars. The next seminar on 18th May will be ran by Natalie Reguis from Edinburgh Napier University who will be speaking on ‘The Air We Share - a TAPAS funded research project’.
On 25th May HEICCAM leader Anna Mavrogianni from the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources at UCL will be speaking on 'ASPIRE - Advancing School Performance: Indoor environmental quality, Resilience & Educational outcomes'. You can find these events here.

Another of our sister networks, Breathing City, have seminars running on 9th and 23rd May at 1pm. The speakers will be Simon Jones (Head of Air Quality at Ambisense Ltd) on the 9th and Dr Abhishek Tiwary (Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering and Pollution Control Technology, School of Engineering and Sustainable Development, De Montfort University) on the 23rd of May. You can find these events here.

Early Career Researchers Updates

We have now confirmed our destination for the Early Career Researcher writing retreat, which will be held 1-2nd June. The venue will be Borwick Hall in Lancashire. In the build-up to the event, we will be running a series of ECR-focused online workshops, with the aim of producing a collaborative piece by the end of the retreat, to be submitted as a journal article.
