261 Residents Complete 2022 ADW Survey

Last fall, the ADW conducted a survey to measure Downriver residents' attitudes toward and understanding of water related issues and their relationship to water in their communities. The ADW facilitation team collected over 250 responses and incentivized participation with a gift card drawing. Residents expressed considerable confidence in the ability of an individual to make a difference in protecting waterways and preventing water pollution. In addition, residents indicated greatest concern about drinking water quality, pollution, and ecological protection. For more information on survey results, contact Pam Labadie.

HCMA Kicks Off GSI Project at Lake Erie Metropark

The Huron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) is developing and installing a series of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) features at Lake Erie Metropark to protect coastal marshes and improve water quality. The GSI features include 16 bioswales and 2 rain gardens, which will capture over 1.5 million gallons of stormwater each year. HCMA is also working with the Wyandot of Anderdon Nation to restore 8 acres of wetland habitat at the Six Points site just north of Lake Erie Metropark. For more information on the project, visit HCMA's website.

  Tips

Know Before You Seal

If you seal your asphalt driveway, avoid using coal tar sealcoats. Banned by several Downriver communities, these products have high levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), many of which are hazardous to human health. Instead, choose asphalt based, acrylic or latex alternatives with low or no PAHs. Learn more about coal tar sealcoats and what you can do from the Huron River Watershed Council, an ADW cooperating partner.

Participate in SEMCOG's OneWater Campaign this June

Beginning June 3, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments' (SEMCOG) and communities throughout Southeast Michigan are celebrating Great Lakes and Fresh Water Week to remind us of the immense benefits that come with living in the heart of the world's greatest freshwater resource. This celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the responsibility we share in protecting water quality for ourselves and future generations. There is only One Water, and it's ours to protect. Everything you need to participate as a partnering community is included in a media kit here. For more information, visit SEMCOG's website.

Join the Michigan Conservation Stewards Program

Participate in this fall's Michigan Conservation Stewards Program (CSP)! CSP explores the foundations of conservation in Michigan and its diverse ecosystems. It helps participants gain the skills needed to contribute to land and water stewardship and educational efforts in their local communities. CSP also empowers participants to build their own networks with other like-minded individuals and local conservation organizations. More information on the 8-week hybrid course can be found on the program web site.
