I recently watched a program about finding the nerve centers within the human brain. Through advanced technology, researchers were able to give a US Army vet a prosthetic limb that allows him to regain the human sensation of touch. It was a powerfully emotional story and deeply complicated science. I learned how little I actually know about the human brain. I was left saying to myself; I’m still not sure how that’s possible.
Have you ever felt that way about God? Theological concepts like the Trinity are impossible to comprehend with our finite human minds. The practical ramifications of the Incarnation will make your brain feel like spaghetti. No matter how much we study or how many church services we attend, there will always be a mystery about the ways of God. What is a thinking person to do, then?
The Bible tells us that “Abraham believed God, and God counted him as righteous because of his faith” (Romans 4:3). The writer of Hebrews said, “It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him” (Chapter 11, verse 6). When we believe Him and trust Him with our lives, we can walk confidently in what we know and trust the rest to be understood once we are with Him in eternity.
Let me paraphrase the words of Paul Tripp, a pastor and seminary professor:
I don't understand much, but of this, I am sure Jesus is with me, the Holy Spirit is in me, and my Heavenly Father is for me. I cannot allow myself to think that I am poor when God’s presence makes me rich. I cannot tell myself that I am unable when He empowers me by grace.
Today we can strong in the confidence that we are His and He has a divinely ordained purpose for our lives.
