🌼 Spring has sprung, and so has our Activity Newsletter! 🌼

In celebration of the unwavering dedication and leadership of our volunteers, staff, funders, and community members who contribute to the growth of our communities, MinKwon is excited to share regular activity highlights at the end of every month (starting 5/31). We hope you stay connected and informed with us this year.

January 2023

Our City, Our Vote 📋

On January 3rd, our Civic Participation team and volunteers collected pledges for "Our City, Our Vote", which allows close to 1 million immigrant non-citizens to vote in local elections!

Voter Registration 🗳️

On January 26, our Civic Participation Intern, Junhyeok Kim, and Youth Organizer, Dahee Lee, showed up at the Brooklyn Courthouse to help newly naturalized citizens register to vote.

Advocacy ✊

On January 27, our Immigrant Justice Organizer, Diana Park, joined New York Immigration Coalition and community allies at City Hall to protest Mayor Eric Adams' austerity budget and exclusion of immigrants and asylum seekers from the State of the City.

February 2023

First English & Civic Class ✍️

On February 2, our Civic Participation team led our first free English and Civic class of the year! Participants practiced various English phrases, and learned more about legislation and policy in American society.

Health Needs Storytelling Night 💓

On February 2, our senior and youth members came together for an intergenerational bonding experience to share the difficulties in accessing affordable healthcare and living without health insurance.

First Pungmul Class 🥁

On February 13, Instructor Vong Pak led our first Pungmul class of the month, with a total of 16 senior participants representing various neighborhoods across Queens!

Access to Representation 

On February 14, our staff and community members traveled to the Capital Building in Albany to fight for immigrant families and their right to #AccessToRepresentation

March 2023

Language Access Bill ✍️  

On March 6, we showed up in power with our partners and allies to support immigrant communities in New Jersey and successfully advocate for the Language Access Bill, which will expand the number of languages provided by department agencies to 15 languages. 

Tax Filing Services🧾

On March 8, our Social Services team provided free tax filing services for working seniors, families, and community members at the Flushing Senior Day Care Center. This year, over 1,000 community residents requested for our help!

April 2023

Hypertension & Stroke Seminar 👩‍⚕️  

On April 12, Endocrinologist Dr. Yoon Hee Choi from New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital presented a seminar on health treatments, preventions, and diagnoses. 

NAKASEC Network Convening 🫶

From April 13-16, we joined over 150 community members in Houston to reflect on our common work and goals, and to build relationships with our affiliates and community members.

APA VOICE Press Conference 

On April 24, the APA VOICE Redistricting Task Force held a press conference in Richmond Hill, Queens, in response to the NYS Independent Redistricting Commission's proposed maps for the new redistricting cycle. Our Executive Director, John Park, spoke to oppose this plan that would divide our communities of interest.
