The next space race starts at our spaceports

There is no doubt that the commercial launch has experienced phenomenal growth over the last decade. The number of orbital-capable launch firms has leaped from a couple to more than a dozen, and the cadence of U.S. orbital launches has moved from monthly to weekly, with this trend accelerating upward on a non-linear curve. That is good news for satellite operators, the broader commercial space industry, and the U.S. government. NASA, NRO, and Space Force can do more for less in a highly competitive market.

Port Canaveral at odds with commercial space companies over dock access

Port Canaveral commissioners are pushing back on a request from officials of three commercial space companies, who say their industry should, in effect, get the first crack at leasing port land along the water when it becomes available. Officials of Blue Origin, Relativity Space and Stoke Space Technologies told port commissioners in a letter that they want Port Canaveral's charter changed to assure that commercial space launch companies get a chance to lease areas along the waterside at the port when existing leases with other parties are not renewed or are canceled, or when new commercial property is added to the port.

ABS launches offshore spaceport guide at OTC

Seeing an increase in global demand for offshore spacecraft launch and recovery, ABS used the opening day of the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) in Houston to announced the publication of the first international requirements for the design and construction of offshore spaceports. he announcement came hard on the heels of ABS’s revealing its role in preparing a former Edison Chouest OSV for a new role as as the world’s first marine spaceport for human space flights.

Alaska Aerospace’s search for new Spaceport CEO under way

The search is ongoing for a new chief executive officer for Alaska Aerospace Corporation, which oversees the Kodiak Pacific Spaceport Complex on Narrow Cape. That’s after the state-owned company’s last CEO, Milton Keeter, abruptly left the position back in March. Maj. Gen. Torrence Saxe is the commissioner of Alaska’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the commander of Alaska’s National Guard. He also sits on Alaska Aerospace’s board of directors

Orienspace of China targets first launch in second half of the year

Chinese rocket startup Orienspace is moving towards a debut launch from a sea platform in the. The Gravity-1 rocket will launch from a mobile sea platform developed as part of sea launch facilities developed at Haiyang in Shandong province during the second half of 2023, CEO Yao Song said in a mid-April meeting with provincial government leaders. Earlier announcements point to a fourth quarter launch.

Launchpad upgrades Imminent

Elon Musk's SpaceX will use for its next rocket launch a water-cooled steel plate that can withstand the world's most powerful liftoff after the debut attempt of its Starship rocket to reach space caused extensive launchpad damage. The giant spacecraft exploded 23 miles (37 km) in the sky, minutes after liftoff in an uncrewed test flight on Thursday.
