Claimed Assassination Attempt
Russia claims to have downed two drones targeting the Kremlin in Moscow yesterday evening. Russian authorities accused Ukraine of attempting to assassinate President Vladimir Putin, considering the drones a terrorist attack. The official announcement stated the debris from the drones fell onto Kremlin territory and no injuries or damages occurred from the downed aircraft. Ukraine has denied involvement in the event. The alleged drone attack comes days before the May 9 Victory Day parade marking the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany. Several regions in Russia had previously cancelled their parades over fears of Ukrainian strikes, however Moscow maintains their parade will continue ahead despite the drone incident.

Flash Floods Kill 95
At least 95 people have been killed following torrential rains that caused flash flooding in western and northern Rwanda. The districts of Ngororero, Rubavu, Nyabihu, Rutsiro, and Karongi, were hard hit, with the Rutsiro province recording over 26 deaths alone. The rainstorms have also caused mudslides, which collapsed houses and left many stranded. The death toll is expected to continue to rise as rain keeps falling. Relief efforts have been put into action by the government, with their main goal being to reach damaged houses and rescue trapped citizens, as well as provide those who lost their houses with essential supplies. Due to the hilly landscape, western and northern Rwanda are particularly vulnerable to flooding and landslides during the rainy season.

First Woman to Win Sailing Race
Kirsten Neuschäfer made history last week by becoming the first woman to win the Golden Globe sailing race around the world in its third running since 1968. The Golden Globe is the world's most challenging sailing race, as it forces solo skippers to circumnavigate the globe alone in small boats without the help of high technology and without the opportunity to leave their vessels. The sailors must also sail around the Southern Hemisphere's three "Great Capes" at the southern points of South America, Africa, and Australia, which are notorious for their dangerous seas. The vast majority of sailors who enter the race are forced to drop out, and in the first running in 1968, the winner was the only one out of a field of nine who managed to finish the race. Neuschäfer completed the race in 235 days, and was followed into port at Les Sables-d’Olonne, France, the next day by Indian skipper Abhilash Tomy.

This map depicts the current positions of the remaining competitors in the Golden Globe sailing race around the world.  Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday's Answer
Q: Situated on the Delmarva Peninsula, what state is only 35 miles at its widest point?

A: Delaware
Located in the Mid-Atlantic region, Delaware borders Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania on the east coast of the US. The state lies on the Delmarva, bordering three bodies of water - the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and Atlantic Ocean. Delmarva is a toponym, receiving its name by combining Delaware (Del-), Maryland (-Mar-), and Virginia (-VA). Delaware makes up the vast majority of Delmarva, and the rest of the 170 mile (274 km) long peninsula is occupied by the Eastern Shore regions of Maryland and Virginia. At the peninsula's northern point, a geographic fall line separates the rocks from the Piedmont region and the sediments of the Coastal Plain. The industry on the peninsula is heavily geared towards agriculture and commercial fishing, with most of the land being rural and just a few large population clusters.
