My name is Ella Thompson and I am the editor of the Sea Scholars Newsletter. When Life Gives You Lemon Sharks 

Guy Harvey Scholar, Jack Dales, gets his feet wet in shark-occupied waters, studying the habitat utilization and the diet of juvenile lemon sharks from various nursery areas across the Western North Atlantic.
Probiotic Treatments for Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease
FSG's undergraduate research intern, Kalie Januszkiewicz, spends her time in the lab taking care of corals! She is working with Dr. Julie Meyer to develop probiotic treatments for stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD). 

"People are Policy": A Socio-Ecological Approach for Florida Red Tides

Knauss Fellow, Will Lyons, emphasizes the importance of bridging the information gap between science, technology, policy, and health to promote effective environmental health strategies for Florida's red tide. 

The Muddy Problem with Channelization and Harmful Algal Blooms 

Can sediments cause harmful algal blooms? Owen Silvera and Mason Thackston investigate the accumulation of nutrients in sediments and its impacts on water quality. 

Bringing Florida Sea Grant Closer to Capitol Hill 

With the 2023 Florida Legislative Session well underway, legislative intern Roberto Ferrer is working to strengthen Florida Sea Grant's relationship with lawmakers at both the federal and state levels.

Evading Extinction in the Anthropocene: Guiding the Goliath Grouper (Epinephelus itajara)
Clark Morgan is a jack of all trades! As a photojournalist, Ph.D. candidate at Florida Atlantic University, and recipient of a Guy Harvey scholarship and Florida Outdoor Writers Association award, Morgan combines his passions and intellect to study the viability of using weighted descent for recreational barotrauma mitigation on goliath grouper by using multisensor animal tracking devices.

RECENT AWARDS 
Miami high school senior, Maite Civetta has been awarded the 2023 Skoch Scholarship. Civetta's research focuses on "The Efficiency of Solutions to Oil Spills."  She plans to attend UF this fall, majoring in environmental engineering. 
Ph.D. candidate Sydney Williams is Florida Sea Grant's 2023-2024 Aquaculture Fellow. She will work with Dr. Angela Collins to clarify the role clams can play in efforts to restore degraded seagrass habitats. 
Alexia Cosman is a UF Microbiology and Political Science student and will be representing FSG in the Washington Internship Program (WIP). While in D.C., she hopes to enhance her understanding of governmental responses to public health, immunological research, or wildlife conservation.  
Shelby Beck is a UF Environmental Science student representing FSG in the UF Federal Relations Office in Washington Internship Program (WIP). Having previously worked in the environmental policy sector, Beck hopes to expand her knowledge of the legislative processes on Capitol Hill.

Introductory Training to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

Florida Sea Grant, in partnership with UF/IFAS and Golder Associates, offers a premier 3.5-day intensive training on geographic information systems (GIS) using ArcGIS Pro, a powerful tool for managing natural resources and guiding growth and development processes.
OPPORTUNITIES
2023 Minorities in Aquaculture Summer Internship
Eligible for undergrads to PhD candidates, MIA summer paid internships offer woman-identifying Black Indigenous Person of Color (BIPOC) students the opportunity to explore their aquaculture interest through hands on experiences either on a farm or in the lab. Application closes May 15.

Mote Marine Lab Staff Biologist, Coral Reef Monitoring and Assessment Program
Support Motes coral reef restoration and research mission and activities at the Elizabeth Moore International. Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration, in Summerland Key, Florida. Application closes May 15. 

Aylesworth Scholarship 
Aylesworth Scholarship is an award for students enrolled full-time at a university or college in Florida interested in any academic discipline with direct application in ocean science, ranging from biology and engineering to economics and food science. Further scholarship and application details will be announced in early May on the Florida Sea Grant website.

NSF-Funded Post-Doctoral Associate in Aquatic Biogeochemistry: Ponds and People
A Post-Doctoral Associate position will study nutrient and energy dynamics of residential ponds throughout Florida and will be supervised by Dr. A.J. Reisinger within the Department of Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL. Applications will be reviewed beginning on May 29 but the position will remain open until filled.
