Dear friends and partners,

This weekend, the Board District 4 team and over 150 students, parents, and community partners spent a morning volunteering for our first ever School Beautification Day! With a focus on greening and sustainability, we tackled more than a dozen projects across four West LA schools, including planting school gardens, greening campuses, painting murals, cleaning up trash, and more. As the climate crisis intensifies, we will continue to prioritize new investments and partnerships to increase green space in our schools, promote sustainability, and plant the seeds of environmental stewardship for our kids.

I am also committed to ensuring the District plays a role in alleviating the effects of the housing affordability crisis. LA Unified has built three workforce housing projects on under-utilized District properties – which help to both create more affordable housing, and recruit and retain school staff. Check out my op-ed to read about the existing District projects – and why I’m pushing to build more.

Lastly, after a horrific traffic accident at Hancock Park Elementary tragically left a mom dead and her first grader hospitalized, I was grateful for the opportunity to speak at a Los Angeles City Council hearing in support of new traffic safety measures we've been advocating for to keep kids safe. This is not the first traffic accident we've witnessed around our schools—but I hope we can partner with city officials to make it the last.

In addition to this weekend's service day projects at University HS, Brockton ES, Nora Sterry ES, and Brentwood Science Magnet, over the past few weeks I was excited to check out Third Street ES's Korean Dual Immersion performance, LACER's after-school dance class at Bancroft MS, the Cafe LA Vendor Fair at Hollywood HS, a mobile museum at Sutter MS, and the Book Jewel event organized by Walgrove ES. I also had the opportunity to speak on panels about sustainable facilities and equitable park access at this year's VerdeXchange conference, and testify about the need for traffic safety measures at an LA City Council committee meeting.
In the Spotlight: Celebrating one of our wonderful school leaders!
Local District West / Region WestAs we celebrated National Principal Appreciation Day this week, I am thrilled to recognize one of our many great school leaders—Tom Iannucci of Revere Middle School. This is Principal Iannucci's 34th year working at LAUSD, but his time in our schools goes much further back, when he attended Warner ES, Emerson MS, and graduated from Uni HS before attending UCLA. He returned to Emerson MS as a Social Studies teacher in 1989, and the seventeen years he spent in the classroom are his favorite point in his career, because every day was a new adventure and no two days were the same. In his time off, Tom loves running, playing with his dogs, and spending time with his wife—and has been able to combine all three through his work with Angel City Pit Bulls, participating in the Charity Challenge every year during the annual LA Marathon.
