Dear friends and partners,

It's award season in LA(USD)! The fast-approaching end of the school year gives us an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful achievements of our students, educators, and community partners. I've been thrilled to kick off the festivities at the Brentwood Community Council Student Award Ceremony, Venice WAVE Awards, Westchester Teacher Eddy Awards, and the District’s Graduate Recognition Ceremony for our students experiencing homelessness, among others. It’s great to watch our students reach their full potential—and express our gratitude for the many people who supported them along the way.

As we prepare to cheer on the Class of 2023 at their upcoming graduations, our work continues to drive progress for the next generation of kids in our school communities. This morning, State Supt. Tony Thurmond joined District leaders to promote LAUSD’s efforts to roll out universal transitional kindergartens for every 4 year old across Los Angeles. Equitable access to early education is a key component to making sure our kids are set up to walk across that stage and graduate ready for the world when their time comes.

In addition to all the recent celebratory events, over the past few weeks I was excited to join the Melrose ES "Bike Bus" school commute and visit classrooms, present a school greening grant to Braddock ES, check out the Inner City Arts program serving our students, commemorate the final meeting of this year's BD4 Youth Advisory Council, and recognize the great work of our partners at Good City Mentors.
In the Spotlight: Celebrating Classified Employee Appreciation Week!
Local District West / Region WestAs we celebrate National Classified Employee Appreciation Week in our schools, I am thrilled to recognize Alba Gonzalez, a Special Education clerk at Reseda High School. Ms. Gonzalez finished her college career as a bilingual secretary in Guatemala before immigrating to the US 35 years ago, where she continued studying Administration at LA Valley College. She began her career at LA Unified in 1996 as a teacher's assistant, before joining the Attendance Office. Ms. Gonzalez eventually brought her talents to Reseda, where her organizational skills and ability to communicate with stakeholders make her a valued member of the Special Education team. In her spare time, she loves dancing, going to the beach, reading books of poems, and traveling (pictured here in Egypt!). Happy Classified Employee Appreciation Week to Ms. Gonzalez and to all our school employees for your hard work and dedication!
