Kia ora <<First Name>>,

Winter has officially arrived, and this year it came early. May was full of surprises, including significant snowfall earlier in the month, prompting an early kick-off for this year's New Zealand Avalanche Advisory forecasts. We also reflected on our Roar campaign, quietly celebrated an exciting anniversary, and shared some awesome content, all while planning our upcoming winter campaign!

Keep your eyes peeled for avalanche safety messaging, real stories and experiences, and epic winter content. Wishing everyone a safe and successful start to the snowy season!

Annual professional development concludes
for Firearms Safety Instructors

Annual training wrapped up in Christchurch with the final Professional Development Day on May 20th.

For twenty instructors, the day began with a catch-up and Hunting Partnership Advisor Adam's presentation on heuristics in hunting. This was followed by a thought-provoking course on teaching and learning techniques by Gabriela Berto. The day ended with an idea-sharing workshop and Q&A about some of the new Arms Code and Storage rules. It was very well received, and everyone came away with a couple of ideas for their own courses.

That's a wrap on Roar '23

From the depths of Fiordland to the bush of the Ruahine Ranges, it's been a successful season for most. We caught up with our partner organisations to reflect on the season and share key highlights and learnings. Read our season wrap-up

Ros says farewell

We're not crying, you're crying! The magnificent Ros Wells wraps up with MSC this Friday, June 9th. Here are a few words reflecting on her time:

Hailing from a long-standing outdoor-loving family from Nelson, I found myself thrown into the fast-paced Wellington life and communications world. It was here that I unexpectedly came across the NZ Mountain Safety Council in my studies. Some might say it was love at first email, and eventually, in 2014, I gratefully became one of the team.

Throughout my time working with MSC, I have witnessed my ideas come to life, experienced wins in the sector and made connections with all types of incredible people - something I will always cherish. I want to thank MSC and the people who have led the team during my time here. I leave not only a place of work but a special family forged over time.

So, when I embark on my next hunting expedition amidst the valleys and peaks of the South Island, the sweeping vistas that surround me will serve as poignant reminders of my time spent with this remarkable non-profit organisation—a humble entity that accomplishes monumental feats.

What's next?

NZAA gearing up for a snowy season

Winter came early this year with significant snowfall in mid-May. This meant an early start for our forecasting teams with avalanche advisory forecasting shared for Tongariro, Aoraki/Mt Cook and Queenstown.
It's all-go in the alpine space with our annual forecasting training scheduled for mid-June.
