Hey, Penn!
Wherever you're reading this from—home, vacation, that new internship—I hope you're chilling out, because Summer Street is running hot!

I'm Catherine Sorrentino, your resident Summer Managing Editor, which means it's my job to keep you looped in on the best music, movies, and art to keep your summer fresh! But summer is also the perfect season for nostalgia, which is why this week I'm shouting out some of my old semester favs. Today, we're taking you back to Philly with a deep dive into the affordable housing battle currently taking over Market Street, as well as a great piece on why AI and music just might not mix. To top it off, we have the ideal read for everybody bored at home in their teenage bedroom—and it might be time to hit replay on your favorite childhood show.

Stay hot,
Catherine

FEATURED STORY

End of the Race

What: are you going to be,
When: you grow up? and
How: do you answer the impossible question of adulthood?

STORIES WE WISH WE WROTE

  • As soon as the weather hits 70 degrees, it's time for an entire generation to start blasting the one and only Bruce Springsteen. As a child who's been raised on the class Gen X parent's Springsteen Summer, I was fascinated by this new take on what makes the man great. It's not his polish; it's his imperfections, as detailed in this great piece from the New York Times. (The New York Times)
  • Working hard, or hardly working? Whether you're doing nothing at your internship this summer (or just trying to), business reporter Emily Stewart over at Vox sees your future: she dives into the white–collar worker who is working maybe, eh, 1–2 out of their 9–5. As Kim K would say, it's like nobody wants to work these days. (Vox)
  • Everyone has a little voice in the back of their head. It can be catty, rude, or downright mean. Maybe you've recognized that snarky, scathing tone in your favorite summer reads—NYT bestselling author R.F. Kuang certainly has. But what does it mean when those vicious little observations are only leveled against women, by women? Maybe the culture likes bad feminists, or maybe we're all mean girls now. You'll have to read this piece before coming to any conclusions. (Harpers Bazaar)
