Hi <<First Name>> !
We're at the mid-point of our online Ministry as Listening learning circle. It's lovely to log in every Tuesday and Thursday to see the faces of people who want to connect to others in a deep and compassionate way. Connecting with people is good. Which is why we like connecting with you each month through Common Threads. Enjoy! -- Scott

From the Principal's Desk

Principal Alan LaiWe are still in Asian Heritage Month! CCS had the pleasure to host an online panel discussion on May 17th titled: "Who is Asian?" If you were there, I hope you found that conversation engaging. You can watch the recording on our YouTube channel.

The origin of that idea was a conversation with my Asian friends who came from diverse countries in Asia. I asked them casually: Are you Asian? That was the beginning of an unexpected but creative exchange about the complexities surrounding colonialization, identity, and social locations. Do we see ourselves as Asians? How do Asian intra-communities refer to themselves and each other?

In that panel discussion, all panelists were born overseas. That conversation would have been significantly different if more of them were born and raised in Canada. As I think about it now, there really needs to be another panel discussion with local born Canadians in mind. When complicated with the growing trend of intercultural marriages, the question regarding who constitutes an Asian and who are being discriminated against when the term ‘anti-Asian racism’ is being used are simply fascinating future workshops to consider!

Asian communities are diverse and not homogenous. The idea of Asian identity is immensely pluralistic and intersected with multiple layers of social realities. Also, subsequent generations of Canadians with Asian heritages see themselves differently. I hope we have done our part, but more can be done to stimulate all of us to be aware of the already diverse cultural heritages of each Asian culture and avoid the stereotyping of Asian communities.

You did DOUBLE the good!

The Matching Gift Campaign was a great success thanks to generous donors like you.  With the match you gave 2 X $20,246 = $40,492 for the CCS Endowment Fund.

The funds in the Endowment are invested and earn interest to provide support for CCS students in the FUTURE. They also provide an annual draw that provides support for CCS students NOW.  Double the good in the world, thanks to you!
