Exodus 5:1 After Moses and Aaron arrived, they told Pharaoh, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘Let my people go so they may make a pilgrimage for me in the desert.’”

Life is a journey, always calling to us as we try to figure out what we are about. We see this thread unwound throughout the many stories of God’s people, both in Hebrew scripture, and in the New Testament. God regularly calls each of us to draw near, as God called on Pharaoh to let the Isrealites go so they could journey for God. God calls on us to worship God and to grow closer to God throughout our lives. Woven through this journey of life, we must lead our regular, everyday lives, juggling secular and earthly things with the spiritual, trying to fit them together in a way that makes sense and keeps us optimistically and contentedly moving forward.

As we end another formation program year on Pentecost, the journeys we began last September are ending or changing, as the summer breaks the usual rhythm of life. For our teens, there is excitement and possibly even a bit of melancholy about ending a school year.

Next Sunday, June 4, is Youth Sunday and we celebrate this ending and new beginning with our young people. During worship, they will serve in leadership roles, as a capstone to a year of formation and learning. For many, there are camps, including HUGS Camp, travel on holy pilgrimage for the Pilgrim Class, a residency in England for our Choir School teens, and a slower time with family and friends. The Pilgrim Class is also looking forward to their confirmation this fall

Two of our youth are looking forward to even bigger changes in their lives—graduation and moving on to college, one of life’s important rites of passage for many. Esther Burlington will graduate from Cannon School and will begin a new journey at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Penn. Mirabel Taylor is graduating from East Mecklenburg High and will study architecture at N.C. State in Raleigh. We will miss them both, but are also excited for them.

As each of us goes through the journey of life, our roadmaps are unique, but we all have the same destination, resting in the love of God. Join me in praying for Esther and Mirabel to continue to grow in Christ’s love, and as their maps diverge from ours, we give thanks for this time we’ve walked this part of the path together!

Happy Pentecost,

Lyn Holt, Director of Youth Ministry
