“I become who I will be within the network of relations, rooted in the non-human, blooming in the intimate, branching into the unknown.”

-Catherine Keller

A Field of Study and a Moral Force

Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim are retiring from teaching this spring, after five decades of guiding students in the classroom. We invite you to read an article by Wayne D’Orio from the Yale School of the Environment (YSE), which speaks about the legacy of the Forum, the ongoing work at Yale on religion and ecology, and their new collaboration with the Yale Center for Environmental Justice.

Blue Ridge Rites of Passage

Blue Ridge Rites of Passage (BRROP) is an initiatory journey for young adults (ages 18-28) and a response to the troubled times we are living through. The program consists of four main components: group council, 1-on-1 coaching/mentoring, medicine walks, and a multi-day vision fast. The curriculum guides participants through a deep inquiry into personal and collective cosmologies, immerses them in the depths of the living world, and supports them to identify and live into their gifts, all within a nourishing and supportive community context.

The cohort will be limited to 12 participants. Acceptance into the program will follow a short application and interview process.

“...the 230,000-square-foot Gilder Center project invites exploration of the fascinating, far-reaching relationships among species that comprise life on Earth and reveals connections across the Museum’s rich collections, trailblazing research initiatives, educational programs, and exhibition galleries. Physically, the Gilder Center connects many of the Museum’s buildings, creating a continuous campus across four city blocks as envisioned more than 150 years ago. Intellectually, it provides a dramatic embodiment of one of the Museum’s essential messages: all life is connected.”

The Five Great Lessons
“The Great Lessons are an important and unique part of the Montessori curriculum. These lessons are bold, exciting, and are designed to awaken a child's imagination and curiosity. The child should be struck with the wonder of creation, thrilled with new ideas, and awed by the inventiveness and innovation that is part of the human spirit…

Traditionally, there are Five Great Lessons that are used to paint a broad picture before moving to more specific study. They consist of:
  • First Great Lesson - Coming of the Universe and the Earth

  • Second Great Lesson - Coming of Life

  • Third Great Lesson - Coming of Human Beings

  • Fourth Great Lesson - Communication in Signs

  • Fifth Great Lesson - The Story of Numbers”

The Place of Our Belonging is the story of an intimate communion of thought and practice, a small and deep work for children and educators, that formed as The Center for Education, Imagination and the Natural World at Timberlake Earth Sanctuary in the foothills of North Carolina from 2000-2022...How might we create a context where children could enter the depths of their own being in order to be present with the meadows and woodlands, the creeks and ponds, the wind and sun, and all the creatures of Timberlake Earth Sanctuary, just eighteen miles from the meadow of Thomas Berry’s childhood? The Place of Our Belonging takes you deep into the inner landscape of this work for children and educators, devoted to the living reality of an emergent and sacred universe.”
