Sun Shiny Day
Dear Parents/Carers
As we reach the end of another half term, I would like to thank you for your ongoing support for your children and the school as a whole. This 3-way partnership has always been, and will continue to be, the bedrock of student success in everything they do during their 5 years at John Hanson.
If you have a year 11 child, thank you for all your support in making sure they have been as prepared as they can be for the exams they have already taken and those to come in the weeks after the half-term break.
If you have a child in year 9, their GCSE options for next year will be confirmed shortly after we return next term.
If you have a child in year 7, they will be moving in to the last half term of their first year of secondary school. I bet you feel this time has flown past.
For all students in years 7-10, they will be preparing for their end of year exams. These are a critical point in the year where they can gain an indication of what they know, can do and understand, from everything they have been taught in this academic year. They will also indicate to my staff which students need to be stretched (academically that is!) and which students need further support in the next academic year.
Enjoy what I hope are all ‘Sun Shiny Days’ over the half term break.
Regards
Russell Stevens
Headteacher
Year 9 Andover Schools Rounders Success!
The Year 9 girls attended the Andover Rounders Schools tournament on Tuesday 17th May. They were placed in a group with Harrow Way, The Clere and Test Valley. They won all 3 matches which meant they topped their group which saw them face Testbourne in the Semi Final. They kept Testbourne’s batting score low with their tight fielding and great communication which allowed the JH team to get key players out of the game.
The girls then faced Rookwood in the final, they showed the same determination and drive to win that they had all day and came out victorious with 11 balls to spare!
Congratulations Alyssia, Jessie, Em, Karolina, Ellie, Alicia, Chloe, Chloe Amelia and Sadie!
Fielder of the tournament – Em Clark
Batter of the tournament – Alyssia Smith.

JH take on Max’s Sportathon Challenge!
On Thursday 30th March and Friday 31st March John Hanson staff and students took in a 24-hour Sportathon. This event was to raise money for The Brittle Bone Society. The
two main teams of staff and students were joined by a number of other staff and students to compete across 13 different sports throughout the 24-hour period with the staff team prevailing 11-2 victors. We also had some ex-students, who had taken part in our previous charity events come and join us to play or support and it was really special to have so many members of the John Hanson Community supporting our event.
The sports played were: Football, Rugby, Netball, Volleyball, Cricket, Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Dodgeball, Hockey, Basketball and a 6-hour run, with all year group coming out to support with the run throughout the day. The even finished with 30 minutes on the spin bikes for the main staff and student teams.
We can now confirm that we raised £5004.05 from the event. A massive thank you who took part, provided prizes, donated food, drinks, their time and finally the amount of support we received along the way! It would not have been possible without you!

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
At John Hanson Community School we are committed to providing equality of opportunity for all students and staff, and to providing a working environment free from discrimination, prejudice and harassment.
We encourage respect and consideration for others, and recognise and value the school as a safe place for learning. The staff at John Hanson recognise that inequalities exist in all levels of society and believe, that as educators, we have a crucial role to play in eliminating all forms of discrimination, in particular against anyone with any of the protected characteristic. We promote equality by dealing with bullying and incidents of discrimination immediately and by educating the young people in our care through assemblies, tutor time, PSHE day sessions and group work where appropriate.
This is part of our responsibility in preparing our students for life after school.
