COULD THIS BE A PERFECT WAY TO SHOWCASE THE ZAMBEZI VALLEY?

Seeing the world’s largest land mammal roam free in the heart of the Zambezi Valley in Zimbabwe is a unique privilege – and, for conservation organisations such as Zambezi Elephant Fund and its supporters, always a poignant reminder of just how critical it is to continue to protect elephants, other wildlife and their habitats in one of the world’s most important biodiverse landscapes.
As part of ongoing efforts to ensure we continue to create awareness and raise critical funding, ZEF has invited a range of conservation-supportive participants on an important collaborative adventure...

The Trans-Zambezi Walk for Wild Expedition
was borne of an idea John Stevens and the ZEF team had two years ago, with the aim of bringing together conservation stakeholders and enthusiasts to focus on the conservation successes as well as highlighting the challenges and ongoing needs of the landscape.
The month-long expedition is set to start out on 6th June this year and comprises a walking route of over 330km through an area of 6,3 million acres of beautiful, diverse habitat.
It is divided into eight different stages; stages 1 to 3 being hosted by some of the key conservation stakeholders with whom ZEF works, and the final stages hosted by ZEF through Rifa, Nyakasanga, Mana Pools, Sapi and Chewore.
The goal of the expedition is to encourage a wide range of participants to spend time immersed in the landscape, with the opportunity to envision what the sustainable future of this iconic valley could look like if resources were combined effectively.
Collaborative participants with whom ZEF works in the valley include:
  • African Parks – ecosystem protection, community and government partnership in support of Matusadonna National Park
  • Natural Capital – conservation investors in the Rifa concession
  • The Zambezi Society – law enforcement, biodiversity advocacy, ranger support, human wildlife co-existence
  • My Trees Trust – woodland restoration within communities, preservation of habitat and assisting community resilience
  • Flying for Wildlife – aerial monitoring and surveillance, data collection
Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority (ZPWMA) and a range of safari operators and concession leaseholders have kindly facilitated the expedition’s passage through the landscape.

“Overall, ZEF is aiming to share a unique perspective of the work being done on the ground by a range of contributors – those impacting the solutions and success stories as well as adapting to the ongoing needs of this iconic landscape.”
James Egremont-Lee, ZEF Executive Director
