MY HERO
(A poem by Joni Ames)

I look back on my childhood,
And even then I knew
Someone was watching over me
A hero, brave and true
The times weren’t good, but there You were
I felt Your loving arms
And I knew that You cared for me
And You’d keep me from harm
I cried myself to sleep some nights
And wondered what I’d done
That those who should have cared for me
Quite clearly weren’t the one
Sometimes I felt like giving up -
Like I should run away
But then I thought, where would I go?
Your love brought hope each day
You slayed the dragons, ghosts, and ghouls
You chased them far away
You made the bullies change their mind,
And Your love did not stray
As I grew up, You paved my path.
You gave me plans and peace
You gave me friends, and those who cared
And Your love did not cease
When life would try to knock me down
And I thought I would die
You led me to a brand new path
And dried the tears I’d cry
The heroes of my childhood
All quickly washed away
But You became my steadfast love,
Forever and a day
Although the years brought challenges,
You’d rescue me anew,
And Spider-Man and Superman
Could not compare to You
The ups and downs of life occurred
And many tears I cried
The heart breaks and the trails were rough
And made me want to hide
Some days were good and some were bad
Imaginations soared
But promises that others broke
You rescued and restored
Impossible though things would seem
You’d help me try once more
You made my dreams be possible
And opened brand new doors
You gave me life abundantly
When others walked away
You gave me joy in place of pain
And heard the prayers I’d pray
When heroes of the faith would fall
You stood there, strong and true
Reminding me that You are real
Despite what others do
You kept each promise that You made
And gave me victory
My hero Lord, You’ve always been
And evermore shall be
