Welcome to FFFD 114

MAY 2023

I have recently moved to Morecambe, on the Lancashire coast, and I'm in the process of setting up a teaching practice here in tandem to my one in West Yorkshire and I had the great pleasure of being taken around Lancaster and Morecambe College.  It was a fantastic facility with lots of enthusiastic people, both students and tutors, and a fantastic vibe. The picture is taken in a recording studio on campus.  A very nice Gretch drum kit by the way.

Here's something they posted on Facebook and Instagram. Thanks guys!

"We were thrilled to welcome musician Chris Joyce onto campus today, to show him round our industry-standard music studios 🎶🎙🥁
Chris, who has recently moved to the area and is keen to immerse himself into the local creative community, was the drummer with platinum-selling Simply Red from 1985-1991 and has continued to work within the music industry.
He met with tutors from LMC's Visual & Creative Studies team to discuss the launch of our new Music courses in September 2024 and he even took some time out to show off his skills on the Gretsch drumkit.
Chris offers online lessons and tutorials for aspiring drummers on his own YouTube channel and is planning to set up a drumming school in the local area. Find out more here http://ow.ly/cCeG50OwOI5
Thanks for stopping by 👏 See you again soon 😎"

WHAT I'VE BEEN PRACTICING RECENTLY
The Art Of Latin Drumming
by Jose Rosa and Hector "Pocho" Neciosup

Another approach to Latin American rhythms. Helps to develop coordination, independence and play superimposed rhythms.
Full of practical exercises for coordination and independence. Challenging but very enjoyable and gets the creative juices flowing.
WHAT I'VE BEEN READING RECENTLY

As I said earlier in this newsletter, I've recently moved to Morecambe and I met one of the local legends, Barry Lucas, author of this book. A really nice guy with many tales to tell.  I've only just got this book but I'm very much looking forward to getting started on it.
WHAT I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO RECENTLY
Check out this link to Spotify for this Reggae compilation I put together - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3OZwYww9HbeNovBhpzMrpk?si=568abddbbb1c4fb0
SOME BASIC JAZZ PATTERNS
These were in my last newsletter and I've included them again because they are hard to start with and require a good deal of independence/interdependence of limb.

Take your time with these ideas and maintain a solid, consistent pattern on the ride cymbal.  Practice just the basic pattern first of all, counting triplets out loud, to get the feel right.  Use play alongs like "Meet the Bass Player" to accompany your practice. Try three bars of rhythm and one bar of comping. Practice each bar separately until it feels good.  When you have done all these on the snare then try them on the bass drum.  Practice. Patience. Perseverance.

If you have enjoyed this newsletter then please share it with drummer friends, or friends that may not be drummers even.
If you have any feedback then I'd love to hear it.
Thanks for your time once again.
MAY THE RHYTHM BE WITH YOU.
