May 2023

Highlight from Bob Ritchie's foraging foray - Wood Sorrel leaves - Native Americans traditionally used Wood Sorrel for medicinal purposes. The leaves would be chewed to alleviate nausea, mouth sores, and sore throats or brewed into a tea to combat fevers, scurvy, and urinary infections.

      Foraging Walk with Bob Ritchie
For the May installment in our ongoing educational series, Bob shared his passion for nature and urban foraging.  He started with a quick botany lesson on how to positively identify the plants.  After that, he led the search to try some of the fresh and tasty offerings that grow naturally in our area. Bob discussed useful and medicinal plants that can be found in the area as well. To see the list of what was foraged/discussed, scroll down to the bottom of the FWFC iNaturalist page here.

Robert is a certified Texas Master Naturalist and past president of The Trinity Valley Beekeepers Association, Dallas’s local honeybee club.

It will be lots of fun!

April kept the Friends busy, especially with all the emphasis on Earth Day celebrations. We were front and center at both the Oak Cliff Earth Day happenings and the big daddy of them all, EarthX. So many people stopped by and heard our story - we are buiding on our momentum, for sure!
Spring Fundraiser guests were greeted by monster bubbles drifting across a sea of wildflowers in the Ferris pocket praire and woodland forest.   After casting wildflower seeds, a hands-on demo of old survey equipment, and an expose of the Tree of Life Program, our guests moved inside to enjoy music, food, wine and a silent auction.

 Spring Fundraiser a Smashing Success
Thank you to everyone who came out to join us during our recent Spring Fundraiser, "A Walk Among the Wildflowers" - and what a wild climatological day it was! Sheets of rain, blowzy wind and then shafts of sun, all bringing the garden cemetery to life. We could never have done it without our stalwart volunteers and our very much appreciated sponsors. View the photos from the day by clicking here.! It's always a great place to visit.

 "From Ferris to Forest Hills..."

For the April installment in our ongoing educational series, and in conjunction with the Forest Hills Neighborhood Association, historian Candace Fountoulakis presented a fascinating dive into the story of one of Dallas' most unique neighborhoods, Forest Hills, home to the Warren Ferris Cemetery. The event was held at the Lee/Fineman residence, adjacent to the cemetery grounds. As the Friends and historians like Candace continue to discover more about the early beginnings of this patch of Dallas, this presentation may need to be a perennial!

Great Big Shout Out of Appreciation!
We would like to sincerely thank the following folks who helped us bring A Walk Among the Wildflowers to life. They have helped us so much in our effort to further our goals of preserving and promoting the health and welfare of the plants and animals who call the Warren Ferris Cemetery their home.
