Friday, May 19
Hey, Penn!
While the semester may be over, no need to worry, Street will still be serving up some Toast for you every Friday morning. Welcome to Summer Street. Hot, sweaty, and all over the place (literally, we have writers across the globe), we're basically the same thing as a summer fling.

I'm Norah Rami. While you may know me during the school year as your Ego Editor, this summer I'll be taking the helm as Summer EIC! We'll be keeping you in the loop about the hottest movies, the best pool jams, and the mysteries of Philly over the summer. When your friends back at home ask how you manage to stay so cultured, you can just shrug your shoulders mysteriously like the main character we know you are; we'll be your little summer secret. This first week, we help you combat post–grad depression while saying good–bye to our own beloved seniors. Yet, while the school year ends, it's just as exciting to look forward to the new beginnings to come!

So whether you're at the beach or in your internship office, stuck at home or globetrotting, on campus or hiding your Penn merch for the next four months—Summer Street has got you covered better than SP70 sunscreen.

Stay sweaty,
Norah Rami

FEATURED STORY

Ego of the Week: Emily White

This Ego might just stand for "Editor Goes Off" as Street has one final conversation with Emily White, former editor–in–chief and Streetie extraordinaire. Holed up in Emily's bedroom alongside their two cats, Editor–in–chief Walden Green and Emily discuss the work behind glossy mag, the wisdom of thrifting, and life as a cat parent. With plenty of wisdom and only a handful of tears, Emily's last words with Street are a must read. Street will miss you, Emily!

FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK

A peek at some of my favorite articles of the week.

Where We Wear History

At the corner of activism and fashion, Focus Writer Sophia Rosser brings you Grant Blvd, the newest fashion brainchild of Kimberly McGlonn, owner of Blk Ivy. McGlonn utilizes fashion as a conduit for both honoring the past and empowering the future. So for shoppers and activists alike, Grant Blvd and Blk Ivy should be at the top of your summer bucket list.

STORIES WE WISH WE WROTE

  • A Texan born and raised (and proudly so), I'm back in Houston for the summer. A mere four hours away, right next door in Texas time, Dallas' bustling art scene has been calling my name (and gas tank). Yet, as art scenes continue to grow, it's important to explore the nuances of who's being included in galleries, and whose stories we're seeing. For artists of color, the concept of an "Art Town" has a different meaning.  (Harper's Bazaar)
  • Having dressed up as Ariel at two years old, I am ready to bring out my red wig and Disney karaoke skills for Halle Bailey's "The Little Mermaid". But watching yet another remake in theaters makes it impossible not to get a sense of deja vu. Being based on a movie based on a fairy tale based on a myth, it's near impossible to define what even is a new story. Negotiating modern culture with old stories is a lot like trying to fit into your childhood Halloween costume. But it doesn't mean I won't try. (Vox)
  • America's favorite felon is breaking boundaries on the cover of Sports Illustrated. At 81, Martha Stewart is defying stereotypes and ageism with her swimsuit photoshoot and contagious confidence. As we head into summer, Martha reminds us that everybody is a summer body. (The New York Times)
