NLIHC Releases Case Studies Highlighting Successes of Five ERASE Cohort Members

NLIHC released today a set of case studies highlighting the successes of five members of the 2021-2022 End Rental Arrears to Stop Evictions (ERASE) cohort: Connecticut Fair Housing Coalition, Idaho Asset Building Network, Prosperity Indiana, Keep Detroiters in the Their Homes Coalition, and Hope Mississippi & Mississippi NAACP.

The case studies overview the activities undertaken by cohort members to ensure that emergency rental assistance (ERA) was visible and accessible to the lowest-income households in their communities and that ERA succeeded in preventing displacement. To ensure ERA was visible, accessible, and preventive, cohort members built coalitions and conducted marketing, advocacy, and information campaigns focused on extending ERA and tenant protections, while also tracking eviction data. These activities, combined with relationship-building at the community and administrative levels, led to enhanced ERA outreach strategies, improved ERA application processes, reductions in barriers to access, increased data transparency, and innovative eviction prevention strategies.

Disaster Housing Recovery Update – May 19, 2023

Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI), Susan Collins (R-ME), and 12 other Senators reintroduced the “Reforming Disaster Recovery Act of 2023” in the Senate on May 18. The bill is strongly supported by NLIHC and the NLIHC-led Disaster Housing Recovery Coalition (DHRC). The bipartisan bill contains critical reforms proposed by DHRC members to help ensure the federal government’s long-term disaster recovery program, the Community Development Block Grant–Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program, better serves disaster survivors with the lowest incomes and their communities.

Recap of 5/15 Homelessness & Housing First Webinar

More than 11,000 people registered for the Homelessness and Housing First webinar hosted by NLIHC, the National Alliance to End Homelessness (NAEH), and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) on May 15!

The webinar, “Housing First and Faith-Based Organizations,” examined how faith-based organizations play a vital role in local homelessness response systems by establishing and operating rapid rehousing and permanent supportive housing programs consistent with Housing First. The panelists emphasized that Housing First and faith-based traditions are not incompatible; in fact, Housing First principles – such as the belief in the dignity and autonomy of the individual person and the idea that all people deserve to have their basic needs met – are important tenets of their faith.

Spring into Action

Join NLIHC’s Last Day of our “Spring into Action” Mobilization Effort to Tell Congress #CutsHurt!

Congressional leaders and President Joe Biden have started negotiating over raising the federal debt ceiling, with the nation facing default as soon as June 1 if they are not able to reach an agreement. Despite the serious harm that would be caused by a default, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and fellow House Republicans say they will only lift the debt ceiling in exchange for steep cuts to domestic programs, including HUD’s and USDA’s vital affordable housing and homelessness programs. It is critical for advocates to reach out to their members of Congress and urge them to oppose these harmful cuts. NLIHC invites advocates to join the last day of our “Spring into Action” campaign, a two-week mobilization effort, to speak out against budget cuts and push Congress to make necessary investments in housing and homelessness programs. During this period, we encourage advocates to creatively express the importance of federal housing resources and convey to their members of Congress the devastating toll that these cuts, if enacted, would take on their communities.
