G-7 Summit is Underway
The leaders of the Group of Seven (G-7), a cohort of seven advanced economies, has begun in Hiroshima, Japan. The G-7 includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Among the group's prorities at the summit are the expansion of economic sanctions to inhibit Russia's ability to continue its war in Ukraine, and efforts to minimize dependency on China. For the first time, host country Japan has invited the participation of financial chiefs of smaller but growing economies, including but not limited to Brazil, India, Indonesia, and South Korea, to join the finance track of the gathering which started yesterday in Niigata. This move is believed to be a counterbalance to Chinese influence, which was on display with China's Central Asian summit, which began yesterday.

Central Nigeria Clashes
Clashes between herders and farmers in central Nigeria have led to at least 85 deaths and the displacement of over 3,000 people. Violence began on Monday in Plateau State and continued throughout the week, with several villages in the Mangu district affected - a region with ongoing ethnic and religious tensions. The cause of the recent conflict is unclear, however clashes between herders and farmers often escalate into raids by armed gangs. Security forces have been deployed, but a local lawmaker reported tensions remain high in the area. Violence has been increasing across Nigeria, with a recent attack on a US convoy in Anambra State.

Pangenome Dataset Grows
A group of scientists have released a study in the journal Nature revealing the results of their efforts to expand the number and variety of genetic samples used to build the human reference genome. The original human reference genome was compiled 20 years ago as an initial dataset to understand human genetics in comparison to other species, however 70 percent of its data came from just one donor. This has inhibited researchers' ability to understand the small percentage of genetic information that makes ethnic groups and individual humans different from each other. This new effort to create a "pangenome" aims to provide that data, using samples from 47 ethnically-diverse individuals from around the world and allowing scientists to better understand the genetic variants not represented in the original reference genome.

This map depicts the different locations of the 47 individuals who donated their DNA to be analyzed for a "pangenome" reference of human genetics. Click on the map to learn more.

Yesterday's Answer
Q: What 96-foot waterfall is situated with an urban backdrop of a downtown in New York State?

A: High Falls, Rochester, NY
Flowing through the City of Rochester, High Falls is the tallest of three waterfalls on the Genesee River - a tributary of Lake Ontario. Surrounding the downtown waterfall is the National Register Historic District and City Preservation district of Brown’s Race, which has relics of Rochester’s early industrial development, and was powered by High Falls and the Genesee in the 19th century. While water used to be diverted to power flour mills, today it is used to produce hydroelectricity for the city's downtown. Pedestrians can stroll across the Pont de Rennes bridge, which spans the river a couple hundred feet from the base of the falls. The most popular position for taking photos in Rochester, High Falls with the city as backdrop can be captured from the bridge, the overlook in High Falls Terrace Park, or the Genesee Brewery rooftop.
