Renovation update: We're on the move!

Our move back to our permanent home at 6701 Delmar is fast approaching! Over the past month, our staff and a team of movers have moved books and shelves from our primary storage facility in the former University United Methodist Church back into the permanent library building, as the construction team finishes up the bulk of their work. While we're applying for permits and waiting on a few things outside our control (such as new basement doors and replacements for the shelving that was lost in the flooded basement in February), we're hoping to be back home by the end of the month!
When we get back, however, there will still be some work to be done. We'll be operating without an elevator until the fall, as the old one was destroyed in the flood, and we'll still need to install the new shelves and walls for the first floor small meeting rooms. We'll also still be working on bringing items out of storage and replacing the books that were lost in the flood, so please excuse any empty shelves you see.
Thank you for your patience and support throughout this project. We can't wait to share the new space with everyone! For more updates, please visit the Renovation page of our website.
Youth Summer reading has kicked off! Our volunteers are ready to take report from our readers each week day from 3 to 7 p.m. and on the weekends from 2 to 4 p.m!
Whether you’re reading in our program or not, we have a busy summer event schedule for you. On June 13 at 6:30 p.m. we'll welcome back Sherry Norfolk for a special storytime called “What Shall We Eat?”. Do very hungry caterpillars, wide-mouthed frogs, and children always know what it means to make good food choices? Young listeners explore healthy food choices with these highly interactive stories, songs and rhymes. This event is free and will take place at the former University United Methodist Church (across the parking lot from our temporary location).
For our teens, we have a two-part series called Trash Movie Night. There is something special about sitting down with a bag of popcorn, a snack, and your friends and absolutely roasting a terrible film. That’s what we'll do at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 15. This first Trash Movie Night will feature 1984’s Ghostbusters. The jokes are bad, the effects are laughable, and this old movie did NOT hold up. (Of note to families: this movie is Rated “80s PG”, which makes it PG-13 by today’s standards. Therefore the event is for teens ages 13 and up.) The event is free and will take place at the former University United Methodist Church.
Keep an eye on our online calendar or come pick up a paper flyer at the library to keep up with all the activities available this summer! You can also visit our Summer Reading Page, or email us at youthservices@ucitylibrary.org for more information!

Adult Summer Reading: Join us this month for a tea ceremony and a taiko drumming demonstration

After a great kickoff for the Adult Summer Reading Big Book Challenge in May, we're moving full steam ahead with some fantastic programs in June! First up is Chado (Way of Tea), a Japanese tea ceremony presentation by Yuko Kitajima, director of the Japan America Society of St. Louis. Targeted at teens and adults, this free program will take place at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 6 in the former University United Methodist Church (across the parking lot from our temporary location).
Next, we'll host St. Louis Osuwa Taiko, who will perform and demonstrate the 1,400-year-old Japanese drumming technique. This loud, all-ages program will take place at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 14 in the parking lot at our temporary space, and is free and open to all.
Of course, June also brings the first discussions of our big books! On Monday, June 12 at 7 p.m., we'll discuss part 1 of The Priory of the Orange Tree in the former University United Methodist Church, and on Wednesday, June 28 at 7 p.m., we'll discuss chapters 1-20 of The Tale of Genji. The June 28 discussion will be led by our Genji scholar, Elizabeth Eckelkamp, and is tentatively scheduled to take place in the auditorium at our permanent location, 6701 Delmar Blvd. However, please check with library staff to verify the location closer to the date.
For more information and a full schedule of events, visit the Adult Summer Reading page on our website or email reference@ucitylibrary.org. These programs are supported by the Library Services and Technology Act, which is appropriated by Congress and administered by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Missouri Secretary of State.
