World Language Day 2023

Every year, the ASV World Languages Team celebrates the cultural and linguistic diversity of the school community by holding the ASV Language Day. "United in diversity" was the motto of the 2023 event.

The assembly for High School classes took place on Thursday, May 18, 2023. A group of students read poems in different languages and showed presentations, videos  and other creations promoting language learning. Some really entertaining were the lip-song recorded by the Grade 10 French class, the video reports of the recent trips to  Paris and Gommern, and a presentation about the  “Mur des Je t’aime”. A small group of Grade 6 students and Mr. MacLarty playing the accordion showed  traditional Scottish dances.

The Middle School Assembly will take place on Monday, May 29, 2023.

ASV Alumni Join the Language Celebration

This year, some ASV graduates participated in the ASV Language Day throughout short videos in which they talked about the role of languages in their academic and professional pathways.

ASV Summer Program

ASV is continuing to accept applications for the Summer Program 2023.  English Language Learners, Advanced English Learners and STEAM Program are the three available pathways this year.
  • Advanced English Learners is the recommended choice for ASV students in Grade 1 and above as the English lessons will follow the Teachers’ College Reading and Writing Project designed by Columbia University, the reading and writing framework used in our school. These language workshops are complemented by science and art projects which will focus on exploration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Alternatively, students in Grade 4 and above interested in technology and robotics may find engaging the STEAM program
Registrations completed in May have a discount for last placements. Please, see the updated fees here.

We invite the ASV Community to share with other families their child’s experience in the Summer  Program. This way, more students will enjoy an enriching experience in which language learning is combined with art, games, sports and fun off-campus activities.

ASV BBQ 2023

The ASV Community is invited to join the ASV BBQ Party on Saturday, June 10, 2023 (17:30 to 23:30).  The event will feature a variety of activities for children and adults, as well as a tex-mex style dinner served by Colevisa, the school’s dining service partner.

Tickets for the BBQ Party can be reserved in advance using this online form from now until Monday, June 5, 2023.

The tickets give access to the event and one tex-mex style menu made of a main course (spare ribs, hamburger, hot dog or vegan choice), additional dishes (nachos, salad and french fries) and one drink.

ASV Community members have three payment methods available that are indicated in the form.

Ticket sales will be limited, so please purchase your tickets early and start searching for your best country-western attire!

If you wish to volunteer, mark that option when you complete the registration form.

Book Fair with Leolo

The international bookshop Leolo has been invited to collaborate in the event by running a book fair. Leolo will donate 10% of the purchases to the ASV Elementary Library to expand the school collection.

Lost and Found Reminder

We have a large number of items of clothing found around campus that are not properly marked with a student’s first and last name, which means that it is not possible to return them to students.

If your child has lost an item, please ask them to look through the Lost and Found this coming week.  Items not retrieved by Friday, June 2, 2023 will be donated to a local charity.

Parent @ Home Learning Series: What Parents Should Know About Streaming

What 'influencer' is your child watching? Last Tuesday Mr. Landete, our Technology Director, discussed what parents should know about streaming, streamers and influencers.

Live streaming gives kids the possibility to watch and interact with celebrities and other unknown adults and teens directly through their mobile devices. There are plentiful positive interactions but this capability also represents an open door to inappropriate content and other dangers like grooming, monetary subscriptions, hate messaging, etc.

The talk discussed tips to prevent the cons of streaming and ways to support your child through open communication and education.

Learning Activities

Grade 4 Language Lab: Special Guest

This year, Grade 4 has had the opportunity to participate in Language Lab on Thursdays during their lunchtime park. They use this space, created by the Grade 4 Blue teacher, Ms Abigail Ramirez, and the Learning Support Specialist, Ms. Alexis Blydenburgh, to explore each other's cultures, languages and traditions. On Thursday, May 11, 2023,  students had a very special guest! Ms. Alena Korotkova, a parent from 4 Blue, came to teach the children about calligraphy and the Russian alphabet.

Ms. Korotkova chose to help students write their names in Russian because "your name might have different versions in other languages like "Julia" or "Yuliya," but your name is always yours! And you need to keep that in mind always."

This is truly the essence of Language Lab: celebrating our cultures, knowledge and languages in a safe space. "It was a really wonderful activity and I know the kids enjoyed it! So did Ms. Blydenburgh and I, to be honest. We hope to have more parents come in and share before the end of the school year!" commented Ms. Ramírez.

Also in Grade 4…

Grade 4 classes shared their American Revolutionary War Posters with Grade 6 to celebrate the end of their research unit.

Nursery and PreKinder 1 in the Farm!

This past Monday, Nursery and PreKinder 1 classes visited the Parque ADAI school farm  to support what children have been learning in the Farm Animals unit. “They could see and touch many kinds of animals, planted seeds, and made doughnuts,” Ms. Aysel Imamkulieva (teacher in PreKinder 1 Blue) shares.

Grade 1 Visits MIAU, an Amazing Outdoor Art Museum

As a conclusion of the Art unit on Graffiti, this week Grade 1 visited  the MIAU (Urban Art Unfinished Museum) Museum in Fanzara. Students have discovered an amazing outdoor museum where the artwork covers many walls and façades of this small town in Castellón. The field trip included a graffiti workshop where students and teachers  applied all of their knowledge of graffiti art and worked like real artists!

Theater Play in Valencià: Robin Hood

LaTourne Teatro visited ASV to perform a school version of Robin Hood.  The cast offered two sessions, one for Grades 1 through 3 and a second performance for Grades 4 through 6.

Middle School and High School

Congratulations to the Grade 12 IB students for finishing their External Exams this week. It has been a demanding and intense period but now they can relax and wait for the final grades on July 5, 2023.

We also want to wish good luck to the Grade 12 students following the PCE pathway  as they have the Spanish university entrance exams administered by the UNED next week. Best wishes!

Fantastic Language Trip to Paris

From May 9 to 14, 2023 a group of students in the Grade 10 and Grade 11 French classes participated in the annual language trip to Paris (France) with Ms. Elena Martí, ASV World Languages Coordinator, and Ms. Paula Jover, History of Art teacher.  The goal of this activity is to offer students a language immersion experience while they learn more about daily life and culture in France.

ASV students were hosted by local families who live in L’Isle Adam, a small town near París, in the heart of Val d'Oise, the Impressionists Valley. “It is a beautiful village, well-known for its quality of life, and a nice beach by the river Oise,” Ms. Martí describes.

Students visited L’Isle Adam and other must-see places in Paris such as Trocadéro, Montmartre, the Pompidou and the Louvre museums. They also visited Auvers sur-Oise to follow last-days in Van Gogh’s Life. The week finished with a fun visit to Parc Astèrix.

Grade 9 Studies World War One

International students in Grade 9 have been studying World War One, from the causes and the outbreak, to the course of the conflict all across Europe. The teacher, Mr. John Fahy, has supported the lesson content with songs and movies. “We also reenacted trench warfare in class replacing grenades for tennis balls. The idea was to get them to feel how the soldiers felt during the war: Just praying not to be hit,” Mr. Fahy describes.

Grade 8 Social Studies Students Share Their Findings on Migration

The Grade 8 Social Studies classes (English and Spanish) recently completed their unit focused on migration in the United States and Spain respectively. This unit was co-organized by Ms. Margaix and Ms. Sevilla to follow the C3 Framework - Inquiry Design Model where students were encouraged to look at migration from four different lenses: historical, geographical, economic, and civic (socio-political).

On Friday, May 19, 2023, the last day of the unit, students in both classes prepared presentations to share their learning and conclusions about migration with one another. While each class researched migration in a specific country, students recognized that there are more similarities than differences, and that migration leads to a more diverse and culturally rich community.

Next week, students will individually write an essay in class that focuses on comparing and contrasting migration in the United States and Spain.

Grade 6 Research on American Colonial Times

Grade 6 completed a research inquiry about a topic from colonial times. Students designed their own research questions, supporting questions, and arguments in groups of 4 or 5 students. Some of the questions they developed were: Could America have been formed without slavery? and Was disease the most powerful weapon in colonial times? The students also learned about public speaking and presentation skills and  presented their findings to the class. They did an amazing job!

CAS Service Activities

On May 18, 2023, the Grade 11 IB CAS students visited the Preventorio children’s home as part of the service activities included in the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) program included in the IB Diploma.

Students delivered the toys collected over the past few weeks in the ‘toy drive’ and organized games and activities for the children at the Preventorio to participate in. “It was a very exciting day and the children loved the companionship and care of our ASV students,” ASV CAS Coordinator Mr. Marc Boyer says.

We would like to thank the ASV community for making the donations of the toys for the children and we would also like to say thank you for the donations of clothing that has been coming into school that is now being distributed to people in need in Valencia by the El Faro church.  Care values on full display at ASV.

Thank You!
