If there were a contest for best Tempranillo in the known universe - the good people from Ribero del Duero would surely be rubbing shoulders with the best. That particular patch of vines exudes a style that is graceful, elevated and resoundingly good.

In the self-same spirit of labels such as Tinto Pesquera Gran Reserva and Pigus's PSI from the area, Hacienda Solano Vinas Viejas 2018 somehow manages to merge the dark, far reaching gothic depths of great Tempranillo with a certain lacy delicacy of layering and undulating smoothness of texture.

Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez finds similarities between the Hacienda Solano Vinas Viejas 2018 (WA 94) and the award-smashing 2016. This tracks popular opinion of vintage similarities across Rioja. He also references far older and equally brilliant vintages from the region which over time have just kept on developing.

Its a delight to relish in the vibrant, floral spirit of the wine that owes much of its success to the change back to winemaking processes of old with very large neutral oak and clay fermentation vats.

The first shipment of this wine sold out faster than free canapes at Jenny Craig conference and so we took every last bottle of the 2018 at the winery and topped up with the equal rated 2020.

A further new kind on the block is their entry level Hacienda Solano Selección 2020 (WA 92+) @ $39. All notes indicate a balanced, nuanced and harmonious bottling at a price that's way less than a handbag full of free canapes...

The Wines:
Hacienda Solano Vinas Viejas 2018 (WA 94)

Wine Advocate 94 points.

The 2018 Viñas Viejas follows the path of the 2016, floral and elegant. It comes from old vines in the village of La Aguilera, and it fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter oak barrels and eight months in concrete. The wine shows very good precision and definition and is clean, aromatic and elegant, with great balance. It has the profile and character of the wines from yesteryear. From this vintage onward, they only use larger barrels for the élevage, and the oak feels better and better integrated. A Ribera of grace. 23,223 bottles and 347 magnums produced. It was bottled in April 2020. LG Jun 2021.

"The 2020 Selección comes from a cooler year with enough rain and no stress in the vineyards, when they achieved a medium-bodied red with 14% alcohol and pH of 3.88. It is harmonious, balanced and elegant, with a medium-bodied palate and a velvety mouthfeel through its fine tannins. It reminds me of the classical reds from the zone before excess arrived. Classical Ribera with character, rusticity and elegance. 34,570 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2021..." WA
