A Fork In the Road

“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’ ”

– Isaiah 30:21

As we continue to explore the importance of not limiting life with our thinking, our choices will sometimes lead us to a fork in the road. I want to share the story of David Goggins, whose book is titled, Can’t Hurt Me. In the Air Force, he was training to be part of the Pararescue Special Operations Command, which recovers and treats civilian and military personnel in humanitarian and combat environments. The program was very challenging, and he shared how he feared swimming and water. Having come to a fork in the road, he chose to drop out.

He said this decision against his dream and his soul caused him to become apathetic and mediocre. He became an exterminator and hated it. His daily life became a routine that included an unhealthy weight of 300 pounds. One night while watching a program on the grueling training Navy Seals endure, a Commanding Officer’s speech during a graduation sparked something inside of him. He recalls him saying that we live in a world that often rewards mediocrity, but these 22 men detest mediocrity. In that moment, he meditated on detesting mediocrity and decided to become a Navy Seal.

Friend, during this life-changing moment, he had a vision of going before God’s throne where God showed him his life. God told him what he could have been instead of the life he lived. He could have been a Navy Seal or an ultramarathon runner, but it would have been difficult. This vision created the man he is today. He didn’t want to leave something on the table even though it required hard work. He decided to choose the right direction for his life, which led to his ultimate success.

Prayer

Father, when faced with a fork in the road, help me to make the right decision.
