Clearways: How to help councils manage air quality
Poor air quality may cause around 30,000 premature deaths each year in the UK. In interviews carried out by ARC West researchers, included in a newly published Clearways study, council staff in the southwest of England saw air quality as an issue affecting multiple departments. They also identified mechanisms that helped them work together to tackle this.

Ability to afford dementia social care impacted by cost-of-living crisis
A new paper – co-authored by an ARC North West Coast researcher and funded by Alzheimer’s Society and the NIHR – shows that, of the people with dementia using social care, one fifth reported that they had cut down how much they used to save money. This is the first academic evidence of how the cost-of-living crisis is impacting people with dementia.

A survey of 870 nurses, part of a string of work conducted by ARC Wessex's Workforce and Health Systems research theme, has found that long hours combined with poor staffing and little choice in working patterns are likely to be behind nursing staff burnout and exhaustion.

More funding is needed to address rising rates of perinatal suicide
Perinatal suicide is a global problem and has been identified as one of the leading causes of maternal deaths in the UK. Researchers in ARC South London’s maternity and perinatal mental health theme have published an editorial in the BMJ calling for more funding to address rising rates of perinatal suicide.

Dementia: Addressing sleep problems
With 47 million people living with dementia worldwide, dementia is a key priority for health research. Four in every ten people living with dementia have disturbed sleep, which affects them, their carers and their families. In this blog, ARC North Thames' Prof Gill Livingston and Dr Penny Rapaport (both at University College London) report on an intervention to address sleep problems in people with dementia and their carers.

In this blog, ARC Yorkshire and Humber's implementation team talk about the gap that exists between research and practice, notably in the healthcare sector. Implementation science can provide the tools and methods to bridge this gap. However, doing this would require moving away from traditional research methods and making research more grounded in the complex realities that healthcare teams operate in.

Encouraging patients to keep ventilation masks on to save their lives
Invasive ventilation (e.g. mechanical ventilators) can cause pressure-related tissue injury in the lung. Due to the challenges of safely delivering invasive ventilation, there is a need for other treatment options. A good alternative may be non-invasive respiratory support to treat COVID-19-related breathing problems, but also other respiratory health issues, such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Working together with clinicians, the ARC North West Coast Rapid Conversion of Evidence Summaries (RaCES) team designed a leaflet that supports patients to use and keep on their ventilation mask, even when uncomfortable.
